Chickens can be pretty hard to sex until they are a lot older, but i might be able to help :) Roosters tend to grow larger and more prominent combs and that could be an indication of the gender. I have heard that people sex them by looking at their wing feathers, there are plenty of threads on...
A day or two ago i hatched out 10 beautiful little silkie chicks, and noticed one of them has a minor case of splayed legs. He cannot stand properly and was wondering your methods of treating and fixing this?
This isn't my first hatching btw:p I've hatched chicks with splayed leg before but...
Hey all, since i joined BYC last year, i've hatched plenty of eggs. I incubated 'em all in my self-turning tray incubator, and when going into lockdown on the last few days, I would make sure the humidity and all that is right, then leave them alone till hatching.
Recently i read an article...
I haven't ever seen something like this before however after doing some research I would suggest to take him straight to the Vet. This could be cancer or something alike. Good luck, I hope Clark will be ok!
I'm not entirely sure however it looks a bit like possibly a silver-laced Wyandotte X. It could also be some variation of a Sussex X. I'm sure someone around here could give you a definite answer though. Good luck! whatever breed he is he is Beautiful!
Hello! I just recently bought 4 Silkie hens from a local farm, they have been here for a week or so. The previous owner said they are roughly 18 weeks old. I have heard that a silkies point of lay can vary widely depending on the bird and even colour? My question is when did your silkies start...
Welcome! As the others have said hens don't need a rooster as it does not increase egg production. Unless you want fertile eggs to hatch there is no need for a roo.
I have never heard of any other name but ISA Brown however it may be different from where you are from. Asking your locals will help give you an accurate answer. :)
Sorry for the late reply. 2 out of the 4 chicks sadly did not make it :( but I believe the one with its legs out has splayed leg. I have done some research and have made a sort of leg brace so he keeps his legs in. Is anyone familiar with this treatment? Even after doing the leg brace thing the...
4 of our new chicks hatched yesterday and 1 of them looks fine but the rest don't! The first chicks is fine and going well but the other 3 are laying down, with their eyes closed and scrambling to try and stand up? The chicks feet go sideways while he is on his belly. I am using an infrared heat...
Thanks for all the pics! We've started building our own brooder using all of your great info and help. We are using a large wine crate with 2 separated areas and infrared heat bulbs for our soon-to-hatch Guinea keets.
Hi all, I was wondering about how to setup my brooder so here I am! It would be great if anyone could post some pics of their brooder setups or provide any helpful tips and info. I am new to incubators with my first batch due to (hopefully) hatch very soon and am yet to fully setup my brooder. I...
I have done some research on this and it seems that chickens establish their 'pecking order' very young. How old are they? Are they under an infrared bulb or just normal light. Normal heat lighting can cause fighting sometimes. If the fighting gets too bad I would seperate them but make sure...
I am also incubating silkie eggs and mine are about 12 days old. I am fairly sure that the dark patches are normal and just show embryo development. Pictures would be good if you can upload them. I don't think you have anything to worry about. Good luck on your hatching journey! :wee
HI everyone, we've been keeping chickens of different breeds for a while now and recently i bought an incubator. Soon after, our guinea fowl hen started to lay a big batch of eggs! I stocked up the incubator with the eggs as well as other guinea eggs from our friends. Anyway, I've candled them...
