    The First Year

The First Year (We made it!) My "girls" are a little over a year old now and doing well. We did lose our big dominant Buff Orp, Peckahontas, though. She got into some fungicide coated seed and, being the top hen, she kept it all to herself. The symptoms didn't show up for about a week and we...

    ALABAMA!!

Quote: I don't live in Huntsville but if I did I would definitely pull this funny little prank on your mom. That would be hilarious! As to the breeds, I've had good luck with Buff Orpingtons and Black Australorps being friendly and easy to handle. A friend of mine in Tennessee has a white...

    ALABAMA!!

Quote: Spoke with a lady yesterday at the nail salon who lives near shades crest road. She said her neighbor has chickens and even has a rooster. I guess it just depends on whether your neighbors complain or not. I live in Hoover and called the city offices before I ordered the chicks. They...

    ALABAMA!!

Hey Julia, Welcome to Alabama, if you're new to the state! I have a 4x6 ark in my backyard here in Hoover. We did have five hens in it but the heat stress caused a couple of them to fight, so one found a new home yesterday. I think she will be happy there. We tried buff orpingtons last...

    ALABAMA!!

Hey y'all, Does anybody want one of my Australorp hens? She is a sweet girl and Easy to handle, but the others peck her head when I put her in with them. I've had her separated for the last couple of weeks but tried putting her back in this Morning. Instant chicken fight! Let me know if you...

    ALABAMA!!

Haha, no I don't suppose it would be. Don't have any GK yet, myself. Skype is really a wonderful tool tho. When I was a kid, I only got to talk To my GP on the phone a couple of times a year and see them for two weeks in the summer. As for the DS getting to Maxwell by mistake, I'm all for...

    ALABAMA!!

Hey Rancher, If you are going to stay in Fairhope, y'all could make a day trip to Mobile. The USS Alabama battleship is there. You can also visit Fort Morgan or take the ferry across to Dauphin Island and visit Fort Gaines, if you like history, that is. Gulf Shores and Orange Beach are lovely...

    Pecking or mites?

No I don't have a rooster and I didn't see any mites in her lower neck feathers, but I might look again in The morning when I have more light. Karen

    Pecking or mites?

Hi, One of my year-old Australorps has very thin feathers on her head. I don't know if the others are pecking her or if there is some kind of creepy-crawlie responsible. The rest of her body looks fine and there aren't any feathers missing anywhere else. None of the others seem to have the...

    New chicks, meet old chicks

Thanks for the reply! The chicks are about 6 weeks old. They are out growing their brooder and I don't have a good way to pen them up side by side. I have a wire crate I could put them in for the older girls to get used to, but I'd have to bring them back in at night. Would that work? Karen

    New chicks, meet old chicks

I got three Austrolorp chicks to replace some hens I lost to the heat. What is the best way to introduce them to the two remaining Wyandottes? They are in an ark in the back yard so they don't really free range but they do have to share the space, upstairs and down. Thanks! Karen

    Mimosa trees

I don't know why I didn't think about googling it myself. Duh! Thanks for picking up the slack for me. All the trees in our yard are seedlings. There are some mimosa's about a half mile from here. I'll get the round up after the seedlings in the yard and keep the girls off of it for awhile. I...
