I don't know how this little silky out ranks even the two big roosters... But there ya go. She isn't a very agressive chicken, but there she is on the top level every night.
Welcome. I just started this spring. This site has been a huge help for me from building the coop to everyday chicken relations to .... yes .... that faithful day the rest of the girls begged me to do something about the 8 teenage roosters with over active hormons . Two made the dinner table...
I think they are all girls too. They look just like my girls do. However, they are just now starting to lay and they are just now turning 20 weeks. So it just might be a little longer. It think 2-3 out of my 6 are laying. They are really cute little eggs.
Well every morning they get cracked corn. They didn't like the scratch mixes they sell.
Then of course, now that the garden is finished they get the old produce that is just past its prime. They love that. Then every few days they get their own egg shells back to eat.
Interesting out of the 4 silkies I got a few months ago. I went in at night to lock up and I couldn't find my white one. I looked everywhere, then I saw she was up on the roost about 5 feet off the ground up with the big buff orpington and barred rock moms. Huh I guess that just shows, you...
My young ones have all layed in the floor to start with. I just pick up the eggs when I find them and put them in the boxes. I can usually tell though because they are smaller eggs. However, occationally I find my older hens laying in the floor or outside the coop. Usually when things change...
Processed my first chickens today. I couldn't stand seeing them all take turns at my poor hens. I only have 16 hens and 5 of those are young still, and 8 roosters. They were working the poor girls over. I already have one in the hospital / recovery coop .
Anyway, thanks to this post and...
I had 3 broodies at the same time. So I just put these wire dog carriers around the nest box each was in and provided food and water. I also put some mesh around the tops so the other chickens in the coop wouldn't roost on top of these cages. After a bit I moved the other chickens to a new...
Bummer I just saw this thread. I would have liked to have come. I have 8 roosters from my spring hatch and I want to get rid of 5. If anyone would like them let me know. I live down in Grangeville but I do go north from time to time.
Frankly my hens are getting a bit abused by all the...
I got a chick from my naked necked and a RIR rooster and she has all of her feathers. She has that black with the shinny green color when the light hits her just right but she definately lost the naked part of the geans. she is very nice.
Here is a picture of mom and daughter
They'll get it. Of course my silkies are never in at night. I always have to collect them and put them in the coop. They don't really like jumping and flying up. They like the ground.
As for the others they had mom to teach them so it didn't take them long. however, when I switched them...
I don't always make it at dusk but I do lock up every night. If for some reason I can't do it they just get to stay in. Whey I am gone for a week I hang freash vegies from strings in the outer part of the coop for them to play with. Keeps them from picking on each other when they get board.
In my experience....Less than a year now. I have old birds given to me and now chick that I let a hen raise. They are all free range during the day. I Let them out in the morning and put them up at night due to the preditors around. My dog has never killed a chicken before. I would try a...
You pay for shipping and packaging. Birds are free. PM me for pics.
two plymouth rock / RIR mix.
three buff / RIR mix.
So far they are fairly nice and are starting to find their voices. 18-20 weeks old.
I did forget to add the breed. Her mom is a turken and her dad was a RIR (died protecting the flock). I have 3 sexlinked males in that bunch and thought she was a female but when she got feathers you can tell she was the turnken's. Her feathers have a very pretty green shine to them. I...
My wife notice one of the roosters on top of her one day. They are all about the same age and I thought it was odd she is still a bit young so I was watching and she was the only one the young eager roosters were mounting out of the young ones any way. Then one morning I notice she was moving...
I have two waterers. One is a 5 gallon buket and the other is a metal one from the store. I am noticing when I clean them out to put freash water in them they have green alge in them. Mostly around the lid of the 5 gallon bucket. It is white so I can see it better but it is in both. Is...
