That's good to know! Thank you! Thank you for the advice, I've only ever had this type, so I don't know the advantages to other kinds. I guess I should browse the coop section of the forum before I make a decision!
Definitely going to check craigslist, thanks! That's where I sold mine, but...
My husband is an instigator. He keeps sending me pictures of "birthday ideas", like this one: http://chickensaloon.com/the-tavern-backyard-chicken-coop/
That's the style I like, and he built me a coop like that about 7 years ago, but we had to sell it when we moved. I don't really feel like...
Hi, ewe105! I'm over here in northwest Chester County, but I lived near you a long time ago. We are also soon-to-be chicken owners (again) with a 3-year-old who will be ridiculously excited to have chickens!! We owned 4 hens when we lived in Massachusetts (5 years ago), and I am itching to...
I'm originally from Lancaster County, and now settled in Berks/Chester County (Elverson). With a (very active!) three-year-old son, I think I'm going to need start with pullets this time around. Anyone know of any one in Lancaster, Berks or Chester counties that may be selling started pullets...
I haven't been on this forum since selling my 4 chickie girls 5 years ago and moving from Massachusetts to Pennsylvania. Now my husband suggested that we get chickens again, and you can only imagine my excitement... like, I couldn't think of anything else all day!
PARKWOOD URBAN HOMESTEAD
My husband and I live on a small lot in a city in Western Mass. We love historic houses, so we bought a historic Victorian in the city.
When we first moved here our backyard was asphalt, with only a small strip of weeds.
We started off in our first home with two...
My husband and I will be moving to Pennsylvania sometime next year, and we need to find a nice town to live in. My husband will be working in Birdsboro, PA, which is just outside of Reading, PA. We would like to live closer to Philly, somewhere around Phoenixville, or Devon, PA, but we are not...

Really? I had always heard that Mass will always side with the renter? That it is overly "consumer-friendly". This is good to know (we were looking to buy a rental property).
I know this has been beat to death, but since the dust has settled a little:
My friends (age group 20s and 30s) still laugh when I say "chicken swap". And I don't think they would be interested in going to something called a chicken swap, except out of pure curiosity. Now, a "market fair"...
I'm bumping this because I have the same problem. Not as bad, but my yolks from one chicken break easily. I only have one of the wyandottes laying so far, but her yolks break much easier than my easter egger's yolks.
I'm bumping this because I'm having the same problem. I'm kind of new to the egg thing, Mine only started laying a few weeks ago, but one has weak yolks. I know they aren't old because it happens sometimes the same day I collect them. Do they need more protein maybe?

Are they girls? It may just be the dogs I've met but it turns out the girls have been the most disgusting. We had female Poms that dug up cat poop for treats. The chicken poop eating neighbors dogs are girls. We know a Keesie girl that not only ate really awful stuff she rolled in even...
I agree, I don't want to use antibiotics as a preventative (I was told to do this previously). Their coop is clean, and has ventilation, so I think I am good there. It is completely covered, including the integrated run, so no standing water or moisture problems. I let them out for about 1...
My chicks (20 weeks old) have had dripping noses for over a week now. No other symptoms that I know of. This is my first time with chicks, and I am still learning a lot, is there anything else to look for, or anything I can do to prevent illness? Is a drippy nose a bad thing, or can it be...
