. As an update, our partridge rocks are in their second winter. Not doing too bad, we put light in the coop, as our winters are so dark. My husband has admitted to naming some of the hens. He asked me how long hens can live. My response was that I've never tried to find out. January 2011 My name...

    Minnesota!

We're in Wabasha. It's snowing again here today, we're supposed to get about an inch, but right now I can't see out the window for all the snow. Our chickens are not happy. Three days ago there were nice patches of grass all over for them. The free range chickens aren't free ranging much today!

EE's eating each other's beards! what the hey!

Quote: We had trouble with our hens picking at our rooster's neck this winter. We dusted him, and the hens with diatomaceous earth for mites. It seemed to help considerably. we also gave them better lighting, and started them on a natural vitamin and mineral supplement. My hubbie thinks the...

What really is cheaper, buidling ones run or new panels

Quote: have you checked into electric netting fencing? I get mine from Premier Fencing, it's actually more of a sheep supply store, but they have electric poultry netting. I love mine. I can move it around as I want to, dogs, coyotes and other creatures give it a wide berth, and the chickens...

    Railroad Ties

I'd be real careful ripping railroad ties. You never know what's buried in the middle of those. Plan on going through a couple saw blades, that's for sure. My husband used a chain saw to cut ours when we wanted them cut. I used railroad ties as the bottom of my run fence for years and never had...

Confused.......how can you afford to feed your chickens

My chickens are free range. However in Minnesota winters there isn't much around to range for. I try to supplement with anything I can get, but they are sorely missing their greens. Quote:

Confused.......how can you afford to feed your chickens

Well, ok then, I'll feed them some cooked chicken. I HATE to see anything go to waste. My co-workers think I've lost my mind because of all the stuff I bring home now. I've got to be careful, I think my dogs eat more processed foods than I do at this point! They get all the various ham...

Confused.......how can you afford to feed your chickens

I've raised chickens for most of 40 years. We always give them any table scraps the dogs won't eat. We've also bought day old bread to help supplement the feed. One of the best ideas came from my 'city slicker' husband. He let pumpkins and squash freeze, then he'll bring one in the house to let...

How much protein is TOO much?

Quote: I'm glad you asked, I didn't have any idea either. I've had chickens for 40 years and hadn't heard sunflower seeds called that. You'll be fine with your chicks. yes, there are a lot of things that can go wrong. Usually stuff only goes wrong if you aren't paying attention. It sounds like...

    Back in the woodshop

I've been MIA during the summer, gardening and such. We've had a couple cool days and that always reminds me that I have a woodshop out there. This is the first project of the season, a rooster cut out of walnut wood. Makes a great little clock!

    chicks playing

We've got a bunch of lettuce that has gone bitter. Somewhere on here, somebody mentioned that chickens like to play with bundles of greens hung above them. My chicks sure proved that to be true. They're having a blast. We threw some potato bugs in the brooder too, and they're chasing them around...

BROODER thread! Post pics of your brooders!

Through the years I've used anything I could get my hands on. Fridge boxes, sheets of cardboard. Once we used a pick-up topper. I've finally made one we can reuse. I cut a Sheet of plywood in half, and used that for the sides. Cut another one in quarters and used 2 quarters of a sheet for the...
