We candled them once it got dark outside, could still see veins in almost all of them. There were a few that showed signs of halted development, but these were the same roughly 3 eggs that looked like duds when we candled the first time. I'm hoping she wasn't away too long. We'll keep an eye on...
Hi all,
Worried and not sure what to do/expect. Our pekin duck hen decided she wanted to go broody and hatch a clutch of eggs. This is our first time letting nature do its thing to hatch any eggs and we've been very proud of her for being a very attendant and consistently focused brooder. (We...
Thanks all for the suggestions. I'm going to be revamping the run design for the banty coop as well as making some security adjustments to how the coop closes up. Until then, my little rooster is just going to be a house rooster. (he doesn't seem to mind it too much lol)
We're trying to see if...
So, we had our first confirmed predator loss this morning. Hubby found my Mille Fleur d'Uccle bantam roo in the middle of the yard looking bedraggled and stunned at about 6:00 this morning. Upon bringing him inside to inspect him for wounds he looked more than a bit bedraggled but ok. It was...
Ok, so here is my entry!
1. Petunia
2. Salmon Faverolles
3. Hen
4. Petunia is a bit of a busybody and a drama queen. If she isn't the center of attention she often makes a loud squeak/squawk that sounds like someone stomped on a dog's squeak toy :)
My Fern looks just like that, she's an EE from Meyer Hatchery. Only difference is that Fern has slate colored legs. Not a speck of color anywhere on her, all white. :) It does seem to be unusual but you can have all white EE's. She is lovely! :)
Ok so I haven't noticed this with any other breed of chook we've raised but I'm trying my hand at Mille Fleur D'Uccles. My 4 chicks are about 2 weeks old and I have noticed that when they are stressed, in new situations (going outside for the first time, wrapping a curly toe so it straightens...
I'm sort of curious about why you want to keep 1 rooster of each breed. If you are hoping to raise chicks that are of a specific breed, keeping all those breeds and roos together won't work out too well. Only reason being, that while you will have a roo of each breed, that doesn't necessarily...
Jeez... it has only been a year since we got our first gals and I forgot how nerve wracking it is to wait for babies that are coming in the mail! Sooooo antsy hoping they get here in the morning safe and sound! We got 2 Welsummers and 6 Mille Fleur D'Uccles from Meyer Hatchery (the order...
So we have two Pekin ducklings we are brooding with 4 Easter Egger chicks. All are eating chick crumbles formulated for chickens. My understanding is that the ducklings need more niacin - no problem, we can supplement in water as people have suggested. I am curious though if this would hurt the...
We picked up two ducklings from TSC yesterday! Ours look just like yours and from what we gather they are Pekins. Ours are in the same brooder that we have a few chicks in for the time being and if necessary we'll separate them out when they get bigger. Ours just love the chicks too! They are...
Thanks for the confirmation everyone! From what I've read Pekins are a good duck for first time duck owners so I'm looking forward to our future together. They are already super friendly and cuddly so I'm thinking we'll have a nice little pair here. :)
We were originally looking for call ducks...
So, I totally caved at TSC today - hubby has been wanting some ducks for awhile and today just happened to be chick shipment day so they had TONS of little cheepers to pick from. I let him pick two ducks from the "assorted ducklings" and he let me pick out 4 new easter egger chicks. Anyhow - the...
I'm no expert, but I'd say it is an egg mistake - the one end of the long thing looks like it is yolky, and since it was in a box with a collapsed soft shell egg, it is likely just a malformed egg and nothing to worry about unless, of course, you continue to find malformed eggs, then you might...
I'm right there with y'all that are
My girls are on the cusp of being egg-ready and occasionally dig what look like little nest areas in the straw bedding in their henhouse and I'm fairly sure they are ignoring their egg boxes but no dice yet on the eggs. Every morning I go out there all and...
