I guess I was under the assumption that if you cracked an egg without washing the bloom off, any bacteria the bloom collected, would go into the egg. I did end up eating it...fried it until the center was good & solid with a slice of buttered toast! Yum! :-) thanks for the response!
I just accidentally dropped an egg on the counter. I was able to salvage the yolk, etc. It was a fairly fresh egg from this week or perhaps the weekend. My concern is this: it still had the bloom on it(I don't rinse them off until right before use) so is it edible or would it be safer to toss? I...

I usually scoop out the big chunks of poo that I find when raking. If there's a fresh layer of nightly poop in the morning under the roost, I'll scoop that out. Sounds like that's unnecessary?
What an amusing thread! Its scary to think how dumb and/or ignorant people can be!
It sounds like needing a rooster to get the eggs is a common assumption. I got asked that yesterday followed by "is it like a period or something?"
I have 4 chickens. 2 of them are 11weeks and the other two are 17 weeks. Any advice on what to do for feed when the older ladies start laying? Should I keep feeding them grower feed and supplement the older ladies with calcium while the younger ones catch up?
I fed mine hens carrots for the first time tonight. The seemed to enjoy them! Now I'm worried tho cuz I read they should've been grated but I cut them into small bite sizes pieces instead.
We want to build a run for our current hens and get a couple more chicks. Hubby doesn't think we should get more chicks until we get the run built. Well, at this rate, I might have to sneak to the feed store and get the chicks anyways. Run or no run! That still gives us a month to get the run...
How common is it for goats to get lice? Growing up, my friend and her sister had a couple of goats and I remember one day not being able to play with them because they had it.
I currently have 2 (11 week old) hens. I recently lost one so we're looking to get a couple more chicks. How hard is it integrating the younger hens with the older ladies? Hoping to get more of the same breed but in case that's not possible, could anyone recommend a cold hardy breed that meshes...
I lost my first hen today. Still trying to figure out what happened(I posted something on the predator & pests thread). I'm truly, truly heartbroken. I hate to say it but she was my favorite because she was friendly, loved to be held & cuddled and she always seemed the happiest to see me. I was...
So, I lost one of my hens today. They free range during the day and when I went out, I found them hiding under a fir tree next to their coop. The victim had blood on her side but was otherwise normal & in tact. One of her sisters had some dried blood under her wing that we're assuming came from...
