Year old duck had a prolapse yesterday. Took to vet, got everything g back in place. When I got home, she had passed a soft shelled egg in the carrier. She seems better today, but vent is leaking thick, clear fluid - I think it's albumen. Any suggestions? I'm keeping her separated from the flock...
This is a month old Faverolle. She is the only one with a bald area around her left eye and a bald area on top of left wing. When she arrived as a a day old, I thought she had watery eye. Eye seems good, but this skin condition is weird, and none of my other chicks (20) display these symptoms...
Hi all. Creating a nice enclosure for my new ducks (3 weeks old). The ground is rough with grass and weed stubble. Should I be concerned for their webbed feet? This is my maiden voyage with ducks. 6 silver appleyards and 3 not so sures :). Thanks.
Two of my plump, Speckled Sussex hens have been attacked in the past 4 days. I haven't found hen #2, that went missing yesterday at dusk only 30 mins after I let them out to free range. In looking for her, I found the feathers from Wednesday afternoon's attack on hen #1. No carcass, no bones...
Most will think calcium deficiency. Could just be a one time glitch, no worries. If it continues, and you are feeding balanced later grain, you may need to cull.
About 24 hrs ago, I caught a broody pecking eggs - 3 to be exact. 1 was dead (partially eaten). 2nd chick in shell died this morning. 3rd chick in shell is still alive. The shell has a hole about the size of a nickel. It's hard to estimate the age of the embryo, but I would guess 14+ days...
My teenage son accidentally collected a dozen eggs under my broody hen who has been setting for 7 days (community nest). They were immediately returned, still warm, but I'm concerned if the eggs were moved too much. Worry or not?
Hi Chicken Lady! Yes, you are right... but, if you had done the same thing with flour, you would have had the same result - neither would we wave the vacuum cleaner bag around. We'd all be hacking! DE is a fine powder, and no, we should not "breathe it in". So for the sake of newbies or...
Can you take a poop sample to a nearby vet for them to look at under microscope? If it was perhaps a fly maggot, then you have no worries at all. If it's not a fly maggot, then the vet will identify exactly what parasite and what treatment, if any, to consider. Dying from a worm infestation...
For future reference, you can use food grade Diatomaceous Earth for an effective insect control - and no worries with your flock. Basically it makes microscopic cuts on the insects and they dry out and die within a few hours. Then your chickens can eat them safely and no insecticidal residue...
Could be an owl. But also could be a hawk - I had one show up at 4 am once, pulled a broody off the nest in my front yard shrubs. Could also be any other type predator - raccoon possibly. You could spend days/weeks trying to figure out "who did it" but honestly, your time would be better...
I'm afraid if it was the coyote, they would take the bird far away and leave no evidence - why chance being caught? Better look closer to home. More than likely it is your own pooch.
Hi all. Suddenly dawned on me that just maybe a white, frizzle Cochin mated to a Delaware hen may produce a nice hybrid. Would appreciate your prediction.
Hi Elizabeth. Hey, have you considered contacting the Dallas Aquarium? Lucy might be able to move in there - great place and lots of friends. Good luck.
P.S.... had a Belgium D'Anver with almost the same symptoms recently - basically a bad sinus infection, bubbles, some head shaking. It resolved, but the scab remained and my son removed it one day - no big deal. I think we swabbed some antibiotic ointment, but other than that, no meds, and rest...
