UPDATE: My hen has been having bowel movements (very runny) throughout the night. Maybe 5 so far since 9PM last night. She is drinking electrolyte water with a little assistance. She just (sorry to sound gross) had a bowel movement that looked like egg yolks. This sounds like she is egg...
I am not sure when she layed last. All the hens have eased up on laying with the cold. She does not seem to have lost weight. There are a few local vets, but every single chicken I have taken to the vet has died shortly after getting better. History keeps repeating itself. I got her to drink...
I have a lethargic hen (about a year and half old) that has runny poop (there is a feather that dropped in the end of her poop in the picture). She has a few lice (maybe 3 total from what I saw). She's not eating and drinking much, but I was able to get her to clean a few drops of electrolyte...
Thanks. Essentially, I should give her liquidy foods (your suggested mixture) until she regains strength and then treat her for worms (if she doesn't have mites or isn't egg bound), right?
I have never "officially" wormed my chickens. I have given them hamburger with cayenne a couple of times, but never anything else. They cayenne was a trick that my boyfriend's dad told me (he's a country man that does things the old fashioned way).
I have done this when their combs and...
No change yet...she ate one tiny hamburger ball with cayenne. She was sitting the same spot where I left her this morning, but I did see two poops just to the side from where she was sitting (which means she moved to poop).
Any help is greatly appreciated. I am desperate here folks!
I looked this morning and she somewhat had her head turned backward (not that this is necessarily a bad thing). He poo looked normal (no odd discoloration). I put more mash in front of her and she took a few bites but then wanted to go back to sleep.
When I got home for lunch today, I am going...
I have to add, I feel her stool is normal. I am not exactly sure since she has been sitting on the same nest that my other two hens have been laying on. Her anus is clean though.
I have a Bantam Cochin Hen...about 4 years old that had been acting normal until about 3 days ago.
She starting acting like she was broody (laying on my other hen's eggs), so I didn't think anything of it.
Two days ago, when I picked her up to get the eggs from under her, I noticed that she...
At this point, it is looking like the chick won't hatch. No visible movement, the chick does not seem to be growing (that I can tell). Today is Day 21, so I will give it until Day 23, then crack the egg myself.
Sigh.
I know not to stagger egg hatches under a hen...but thank you for the advice.
My hen hijacked the egg after she set on her first egg, and when I candled it, the egg had veins. The first egg hatched a week ago and I was afraid that I'd have to play mother hen myself.
I will just see what...
Now I really need advice...mom doesn't appear to be sitting on the egg during the day. Today is Day 18, so I took the egg out of the nest and gently placed it in rubbermaid bin in a makeshift nest, with a heat lamp. I guess this is the best I can do for now.
I am keeping an eye on the...
Mama hen (Buttercup) hatched one egg last Saturday, and now the second one is about due to hatch. Here's hoping!
I candled the egg last night (just before lockdown) and I see a big mass, but no movement. Eeep. Then again, the chick would be rather large at this point.
If would love for...
My hen hatched one egg last week and now she is spending more time off of the nest rather than on. I have a second egg that she has been sitting on. The egg is at about Day 16 and when candled last night, looks like there was movement (big black blob wiggled).
How long can a hen be off of an...
I just had my first egg hatch at Day 19. I know my day count was correct because I marked on the calendar the day she set on the egg. It freaked me out until I started searching and reading about hatching dates.
I hope my second egg (set about a week after the first egg) hatches at Day 19 so...
Dumb question...just because I am curious...will Mama hen move off of the nest when an egg starts hatching, or do they stay on them until the chick hatches?
I have one egg that is on Day 19 right now, and a second that is on Day 11. I am eagerly awaiting the first egg's piping stage. I have already planned to spend most of Sunday out in my garden, which is right next to my chicken coop.
I truly hope that I get at least one chick because the...
Some really helpful answers...thanks.
1) So it is sounding like I need to keep a close eye on Mama and make sure she sits back on the nest to hatch the second egg. Or I might need to step in and incubate it until it hatches. =(
She is eating and drinking. I already made sure of that. Thanks for the suggestion though. She seemed much better last night and this morning.
Not only did I make sure the lamp was secure so it wouldn't fall, but I also put zip ties on the clamp. That sucker isn't moving. :-)
