Thank you! She found someone, but I really appreciate it! They were the sweetest, would have taken them myself if I had room!

    New Breeds for 2026 Spring

Besides what you already say you have had, some others would be: Brahma Plymouth Rock Bielefelder Welsummer Marans Salmon Faverolles Not sure if you would want colorful eggs, but my olive eggers have been much friendlier than my Easter Eggers (all friendly vs all flighty, multiple sources)...

7 week old chicks cold tolerance

Yes, that’s a great idea. The extension cord is in the (covered and winter tarped) run. That is awesome will look for one of these also.

7 week old chicks cold tolerance

Thanks! Will definitely get some for indoors. Are they ok in an outside outlet? That is the only reason I haven’t used one yet…I have a single utility outdoor extension cord plugged in for the water.

7 week old chicks cold tolerance

I am hoping to move my 5 week olds outside this weekend to the big hen coop. I have a removable barrier in the run with an attached dog crate. I usually open the dog crate door into the sectioned area, let them explore all day, and they put themselves back in the crate when the adults head into...

    NY chicken lover!!!!

Hi everyone. A friend of mine got some new chicks this summer that are about 20 weeks old. They had an emergency household situation and had to move out quickly. They have 8 pullets about to lay available for free to anyone who can take care of them. Near Utica/Rome area.

    Welsummer and Marans, seeking insight!

I love our Welly! She is strong but not a bully, curious and personable but not cuddly, alert and smart. One warning, I was told Welsummers are loud. Ours is loud in volume. Not necessarily chatty, but all alerts are much louder than the rest of my 20 something hens. If you need a quiet chicken...

Looking for breed recommendations to add to our flock of 5

McMurray has been amazing for me also. I have had wonderful luck w both hatcheries. McMurray has more breed options, so depending on what chicks I want is where I order from. Mt Healthy has better color specific variety but less breeds. Those are the two main differences I’ve experienced

    Integration after tragedy

Thank you. Ok good I’m glad the chicks will help w her having some status. We were just lazy integrating this year, normally I have them together much younger. I will be brooding the new chicks in the coop and run this fall to make it super easy to move them.

    Integration after tragedy

I have a group of hens aged 1-4 years old. In an parallel run with smaller coop I was housing eight 10 week old chicks, one cockerel and 7 pullets. We got home stuck out and got home shortly after dusk one night, and found 6 of the young pullets had been killed. Just one pullet and the cockerel...

new research debunks trad views on nutrition

Is it MTHFR mutation? Very common in women. Yes. However pharmaceutical companies put synthetic folic acid in prenatal vitamins. Many women have issues and don’t attribute it to this. A great brand of supplement is Thorne. Another is pure encapsulations. They use “real” supplements and avoid...

    Preserving Your Harvest

I am hoping to do beans on Monday. Theres a bunch *almost* big enough to pick...so I pulled the ready ones and will store in the fridge, then do another picking early Monday morning and can whatever I have. Beans were late here in NY this year.

new research debunks trad views on nutrition

Not sure what type of diet or food restrictions you are on. When I started my health journey, I went full vegan. It ended when I had extreme fatigue and was supplementing with more than I was eating daily. I then became vegetarian, adding in seafood and eggs. Still felt like something was...

    Let’s Talk About Bird Flu

I use homemade oil of oregano when I start feeling sick. Also make my own fire cider for colds. Have some teas I drink when congested. Haven’t taken an allergy med or flu med in 2 years (because I haven’t needed it after taking what I make). There is a time & place for pharmaceuticals but I try...

how do i get the most unique colors?

Oh, one more thing. I think the time of year you order in NY can help mail chicks survival. We never order before the beginning of May. March & April are so unpredictable when it comes to cold snaps. Southern orders would probably be the opposite, but I make sure the weather is warm enough so...
