Wrold had bubs out in the run when Henry gave his warning call.
Bubs immediately went under cover while mum stood guard.
She is actually well under cover & hard to see.
Wrold is definitely protective.
I am still treating for stick flea & have to keep mum & bubs together or they both get frantic.
No-one did this the last 2 times so I wasn't sure if this was normal or a strange aberration.
:fl I have a pullet. Mr Google, not the most reliable source, suggest...
Yes, she's done all that. They've been out of the coop in the run. All that is normal. She's doing all the mum things while still acting broody. I know my girls are nutters but this is a whole new level of nuts.
Ok, all you broody experts: Wrold has hatched her chick; the excess eggs have been removed but the silly girl is running round with her chick still acting broody. She is bokking away, fluffed up like a dandelion head & tossing bits of straw over her back. Has never happened before. Should I...
Me too. You probably don't remember but she & her sister, Alpia, were chronic broodies their 1st year. Unbreakable. 🙄 It's so nice to be able to give her fertile eggs & let her sit to some purpose.
No. She stole an Aracuna egg so was sitting on 2 blue & a brown- not that it matters any more. I was out all morning & came home to find Wrold off the nest & out in the coop with her chick, the extra eggs stone cold. I'd say she is done.
EXCITING NEWS!
I have one egg hatching! I can see the beak & some of the feathers. She looks a bit like Cobweb. I'd about given up thinking all the eggs were duds or Wrold had done something dastardly along the way.
Henry is the most wonderful rooster!
I am, as I have said, battling stick flea. Today there were very few on anyone & few running round ~ until I came to Henry.
Now Henry doesn't like being grabbed anymore than any other chicken but he is docile once nabbed & He settled into my lap prepared to...
My resident currawong has built her nest in the ficus that overhangs the chicken coop.
She is fiercely territorial but seems to understand the chickens, the cats & I are now part of her territory. She does not harass us. She does steal the occasional egg but what's an egg or two between friends?
I lost Sweetpea yesterday. Not really a surprise. She never regained her mobility despite everything I tried. I think she enjoyed her life, such as it was. She had a good appetite & was always excited for me to lift her out of her crate & settle her somewhere in the pen with food & water...
