    White Genes Health Question

Have any of you peeps on here found that white chickens are more prone to health issues? I have talked to a couple of people local to me that have found their white pekins to be really susceptible to health issues, and my white Araucanas (live in New Zealand, we follow the British tailed...

Is my Easter Egger a Hen??

The white is a cockerel. Pointy feathers in hackle and base of tail. Also red coming thru in shoulders and over back. That's a boy thing too

    Araucana thread anyone?

I live in NZ and we have the british tailed araucanas here, however i feed all my breeders on grower pellets, as opposed to layer feed. When on layer feed i was lucky to get a 50% hatch rate, with lots that quit a few days in, and then a heap that made it to lockdown, but died before internally...

    Recessives and Throwbacks

Will they all be isobelle? As i have a slightly older chick who is isobelle, however this one weird chick does not look to be in any way, shape or form, lavender of any kind. Brown and tan stripes, and wings coming through the same as all my other wildtypes. Have it banded so i know which one it is.

The wildtype chick is still confusing me, does anyone have any idea how it came to be produced from two lavenders?

    Recessives and Throwbacks

Oh no that's terrible :( I really hope they show up tomorrow like nothing has happened. Yup makes it doubly hard, especially when there are so many different elements to try and get right. All anyone can do is breed to their best interpretation of the standard. And yup, some people seem to...

    Recessives and Throwbacks

...i was rather annoyed at the judge, as he placed size over everything. He passed a couple of my hens that were a little small, but otherwise pretty **** good, and placed birds that were bigger, but had faults, like wrong coloured eyes, incorrect comb, the 2nd place hen had a straight comb (big...

    Recessives and Throwbacks

Thanks, me too :) And yea, when i was first starting out in the breed, it was pretty much near impossible trying to find info about the araucana we have in nz, it kept telling me about the ameraucana, and a couple of bits about the true rumpless one lol. However after a ton of digging, and...

    Recessives and Throwbacks

Yea, it's doing my head in lol. All the info i have dug up, and all the genetic rules say lav x lav should only produce lav. I don't even know what to call my mystery pullet haha And yup, here in nz we are past the halfway point for summer :( It's very depressing haha i hate the end of summer...

    Recessives and Throwbacks

Thanks :) Hmmmm, if they did it would have to be a recessive, the cock was a dark blue with a little bit of red leakage, and the hen was black with quite a bit of silver leakage around her face. I don't know the parentage of the lavender cock i put over my mystery pullet as i bought him in...

    Recessives and Throwbacks

Having a bit of a brain melt at the moment. Lavender is doing my head in. I had a pullet hatch end of last season, who i originally thought was lavender, she had a full sister who was def lav, however the other pullet was very light in colour, very even all over, did not have the frayed...

    Odd laying locations...

It's a broody thing. Most will pull out a few feathers and line their nest with them, some get carried away and almost end up bald.

    Odd laying locations...

My girls love to lay in my garden shed, ever since a hen i bought last year started laying in there. I have set them up a couple of nest in boxes and there is a waiting list every day for them. But fake eggs work well to start them laying in a new nest i have set up. I also use golf balls, as...

    Blue, black or splash Wyandotte?

Colour wise, he is a blue. However, not a very good one. The colour coming through is called leakage, and is highly undesirable. He should be a solid blue colour, no gold or silver anywhere.

    Colour/Genetic confusion

Boy is it frustrating lol I am breeding Araucanas, which here in NZ and Aussie follow the british standard, which has a tailed, muffed version with a crest. They look VERY similar to the Ameraucana, with a crest. The allowable colours follow the OEG colours, so anything OEG goes That's what...

    Colour/Genetic confusion

Hi all. I live in New Zealand, and have just finished my first breeding season. Going into winter here atm. Have been doing heaps of research online to try find out as much as possible, and talking to other breeders ect. I have hit a weird brick wall with a couple of breeders here, and their...

    Araucana thread anyone?

Here in New Zealand our Araucanas follow the Aussie ones, which i believe follow the British, as i think(correct me if wrong) the British accept both the rumpless/tufted and the tailed/crested/muffed varieties. Our aras are very similar to the ameraucana in build i have found, with the main...

Pea and Cushion Combs, Genetics Behind Them?

An update for any interested followers. The promising boy in the photos above developed a pea comb with a bit of a kink in it, i am thinking that would come from dad's cushion modifying it. Had to cull the cockerel due to him developing a scissor beak that got quite bad by 4 months old. On...
