I forgot my thankyou to 'willowbranchfarm's for this info: Thank You. Orschilens only had a one gallon jug; $99.00 I passed and went to the next town over to a TSC. They carried the 10oz packet of "Corid". The girls all have medicated water now. Before looking this up on this great...
Heading to Orschilens (sp?) right now, time for cordid. We have a sick bird isolated. Started with DE in yogurt this am. She definitely fits the symptom; fluffed and not moving, no appetite.
Cohl0406, so sorry to read of your loss. We had a loss this summer and even though these aren't pets the loss is at times devastating. Hope the next adventure with chickens goes more smoothly.

Yea, hmm, I'm thinking you will find sand works quite well . I use play sand, not too fine, not too coarse for the girls in the coop. When I get the run reconfigured, I'll use sand, PDZ, peat, etc in that as well. Have a care when choosing your sand, some sand is so fine it will simply...
Yesterday the girls gave us a couple Christmas presents.
I settled on adding another 18' rope of lights which are hung above the outside roost.
I also settled on adding a half hour each week, am now at 12 hours of light.
Charlie
The 'today' in the quote would be 4 weeks and 1 day past. Yesterday, when we arrived home from our family Christmas celebration, we had a Christmas present from our girls. Two beautiful eggs!
I've been adding a half hour to the timer each week, am now at 4:30 am which gives the girls 12 hours...
A small update on winter watering. A month past I purchased a "cube" which switches "on" at 35° and "off" at 45°. Seems to be working well, no frozen water and no unnecessary evaporation when the days are warmer.
Charlie
Heck yea, that's a good sign! Hope it's just the first of more to come .
I just got up at 6:30 am to see if my lights were on, nope. Had to go outside and re-calibrate the timer so the lights would start. Mission accomplished. Of coarse the girls spent the night "out" perching on the...
Today I just installed a rope light in the coop. Want to help the ladies start laying again. This is their second winter and I didn't understand about adding light starting in Sept. So I want to adjust the girls light as in 14 to 16 hours per day.
1) My girls will use the outside roost...
Today I installed an 18' rope light.
Timer has been mastered and set for 6:30 am tomorrow. I even changed their inside roost pole to a 2x4 wide side up, they like that better at the outside roost, seem more comfortable. This is the birds second winter, last winter they layed continuously...
Yep, that's exactly what we see. Only don't have enough room to make a path. That is way too funny. I need a bigger pen so I can do that to the girls. Did I say that; I'm sure I meant 'for' the girls .
Thanks iwiw60.

Funny how ours reacted last year to first snow. Wouldn't go onto the snow, no way no how. They'd hop down and go under the house to dirt; but not the snow. We started throwing leaves into the pen, this was enough to get them onto the leaves/snow under and scratching the leaves/snow just as...
Sad ending to a good chick a few months back. The day before we were moving blacky and her two chicks into the flock a neighbors dog came a calling. Hottest day of spring/summer so far. I drive truck so am not home for daily chores. My wife had a day she couldn't be home at noon for lunch...
This is my set up for winter. Dog dish in a house, keeps most dirt out and keeps birds from standing on side of dish and fouling the water . The cement blocks set the height at roughly 6 - 7" or about bird beak height as the roof is only allowing 3 - 4" of access space. Sloping roof is steep...
How unusual is it for a black sex-link hen to go broody and become a good mother? One of our hens has hatched out two chicks and at a week old appears to be a good mother.
Charlie
The name, yea go figure.
We tried breaking Blacky from going broody to no avail. After two weeks we procured 7 eggs from our niece and set Blacky up with her own maternity ward. Along the way eggs kept disappearing but on Friday we have two new chicks .
We don't know what happened to most...
We didn't start out as 'composting' in the run, however that is what we have ended up with. Our girls did not like snow the first time they saw it. Would not get down on it willingly. After spending a whole day on the roosts in the run and hop/flying to the house back and forth we came up...
