I am selling off my 9 laying hens since I will not have time to care for them in the coming months. They have a chronic respiratory disease, but do not show any symptoms unless they are under extreme stress (heat, etc.).
Some of them are very friendly lap chickens and easy to handle. I would...
I've had something like this happen before. Two of my chickens escaped and we had all kinds of predators around, including several loose dogs. They somehow survived and returned 3 days later unscathed.
Your chickens may return to the coop on their own, but I would keep searching for them before...
Yeah, there was one rooster staying behind their pen who seemed sick, and the hay the shelter kept for everyone to use was right next to him :') I regret not being more careful, but I guess the situation was too overwhelming to pay attention. I'm surprised nobody else caught the sickness except...
So today one of my other hens just fell ill with some respiratory illness. I remember we took all of the hens to a public shelter last year during hurricane harvey, during which they caught some respiratory illness from the other chickens there. This other hen is already showing signs of...
This morning she is again acting somewhat lethargic. Her crop was full (not very big, though) and has not gone down. I am massaging it and still giving her Monistat. She was doing fine until I fed her some watermelon yesterday evening (it was the only thing she would eat). Could fruit worsen her...
Yes, her crop was still full in the morning. She had access to food but she wouldn't eat, she was only drinking. Her crop felt like it was full of fluid, not hard. Her breast bone feels kind of sharp under the skin, but she does not feel significantly lighter. She doesn't have any abdominal...
Yes, the crop reduced in size. It's a bit smaller than a golf ball now. Her breath still smells bad, but she is not regurgitating fluids. She is still pooping frequently, though. She has been on the Monistat for 2 days. I gave her two more doses today. I also gave her Nutri-drench as soon as I...
Yesterday evening she returned to being lethargic again and won't eat. I tried making a wet mash of some of her feed, but she isn't showing interest in anything. Should I increase the dosage of Monistat (currently giving 1ml twice a day) or just wait? I am also massaging her crop 4 times a day...
I don't have any chick crumb right now, I just gave her some hard-boiled egg. She only ate a bit though, so I'll probably have to syringe feed her yogurt again. Yes, I massaged her a few times yesterday and this morning, but I did not vomit her. When she vomited on her own yesterday morning, a...
This morning my hen was doing a lot better. She is still slow, but not nearly as lethargic as yesterday. She is now opening her eyes and moving around the crate. Her crop also feels smaller and her poop is less watery. She is also drinking on her own and seems hungry. I syringe fed her some...
I'd like to empty her crop, I'm just not sure if I should give the monistat time or go through with vomiting her. I don't want to accidentally kill her if she has a chance. And no, I didn't see any eggs from her before this started. But I checked her abdomen when I first brought her in and it...
I gave her some nutri-drench this morning, but she immediately started vomiting badly. She was also shivering a bit before this and was not drinking at all. I picked up some Monistat today and gave her 1mL with some water added. I will give her another dose in the evening. She is a lot less...
Oh sorry, by stomach I meant her crop. I'm not really comfortable draining her, though. I got some Sav-A-Chick probiotic from the feed store today that I put in her water. I have heard of people using Monistat to treat sour crop and I will try to get some tomorrow, but I'll probably use it as a...
Thank you for the links. My hen is 4 years old. Her vent is clear, just a bit messy from all the watery poop. So I doubt it's vent gleet. This morning her stomach was still full and she is acting the same. I replaced her water and syringe fed her yogurt. I'll keep feeding her yogurt throughout...
Hello o/ Yesterday morning I noticed one of my Easter Egger hens was walking very slowly and staying away from the flock. I gave her some Nutri-drench which usually helps (I suspected it was due to the heat and she had similar problems last year), but she was doing no better today. This morning...
Thank you for the replies! We gave her a little electrolyte water with a syringe and she is just really tired now. Hopefully she'll be alright. Our feed store sells poultry nutri-drench, so I'll see if I can get some tomorrow when I go out.
I also put some leftover watermelon in the freezer...
Hello! I went out this evening and noticed one of my hens was behaving very weak and having trouble standing. It's very hot, so I figured she was dehydrated and sprayed her down with water. I just brought her inside and dried her off. I also got her to drink a bit, but what else should I do for...
I tried the fan but it didn't seem to be doing much for them, so I've decided to just keep them indoors until they grow some more. Thanks for the help! :)
Hello! I just got 15 chicks shipped this week and unfortunately lost one to the heat. I started keeping their heat lamp off, even at night, and they're doing much better now. However, today I noticed one panting a lot and I'm not sure how to help them cool down. Currently the heat index is 104...
The chicks are all doing fine after turning off the heat lamp last night. They're a lot more active and so far no more pasty butt. I'll continue to leave the heat lamp off since the temps won't be changing anytime soon. Thanks so much for the help! :)
