It has been a rollercoaster! We’ll see what happens. He hasn’t crowed since earlier this morning. It really seemed as though our dominant hen attacked him after he crowed. Maybe he’s afraid to do it again?
Super late! He turned 1 last month! He looks like a rooster except for the tail. And no saddle feathers.
I first heard the crowing when I left to take my son to the bus stop. He was the only bird out of the coop. When I came back 10 minutes later I went to the coop, all the chickens were...
I agree about the comb and wattles! They are much bigger than the hen’s and she is laying. His feathering doesn’t look much like a rooster though. No saddle feathers. He turned 1 last month.
I hope it’s a hen that lays eggs rather than a hermaphrodite. There are 5 in our family and we go through eggs quickly. We have 7 chickens so I wasn’t planning on getting any chicks this spring.
Thank you once again for your help! I’ll post an update if anything changes. Hopefully we’ll see...
Well we bought it thinking it was a pullet, so if it is a hen and she lays, great! That’s exactly what we wanted. On the other hand, my husband has been wanting a rooster so when we thought it may be a rooster he was happy. So either way it’s fine. Hopefully I’ll start finding some new small...
And another. Wow, this is really interesting! We never suspected it was a cockerel until it was 7 months old

Is this what you guys are talking about? Just found an article on chickens that are both female and male.

Yes. It’s much bigger and brighter. But also like OldHen said, maybe it’s getting ready to lay? I’m not sure if the other has laid an egg yet but she does crouch down when I go to touch her, like all my other hens. The mystery bird does not. Not sure if that means anything. I thought I read...
:D:D:D:D
Yes, the one is definitely a hen. It’s just so weird how the other has such different features. All my hens’ feathers are pretty much shaped the same and lay the same, even though they’re different breeds and different colors. The feathers on the mystery bird are odd because they’re...
Also, although there are no saddle feathers, the feathers in that area are longer and thinner than the other wyandotte’s and sort of drape around the tail, just not as dramatic as a rooster’s. The tail feathers are also longer and thinner than the other wyandott’s. Maybe you can see what I’m...
I love your made-up words and I completely agree! One minute I’m sure it’s a hen, then another minute a rooster! Thank you for reassuring me I’m not crazy for continuing to question this
It does not have saddle feathers yet it’s feathers are very different than the hens. The hackle feathers...
I’m back. Sorry for all the updates guys. We finally got some warm weather here so I was able to spend a little more time out with the birds and got a few more pictures of the mystery bird.
We still haven’t heard a crow or gotten an egg. The 2 Columbian Wyandottes and barred rock will be 1...
Thank you for helping me! I really appreciate it! It is just so weird because this bird looks so much different than the other one of the same breed that we got at the same time. Plus it has never laid an egg!
I promise it’s the same bird! And I agree, he/she does look so different! It has filled out and, As I said earlier, the comb and wattle have grown a lot in the last month. It’s cold here so it was puffed up when I took the recent pictures.
I’ll post more yolk pictures next time we have eggs. :)
