It depends on which artificial sweetener. Xylitol is in many products but can be deadly to dogs. Sorbitol has a laxative effect on both dogs and cats but more so in cats. If there are any other health issues in the pet it may exacerbate symptoms.
Too many anthropomorphize the animal and dehumanize the person. Personally I think the animal is much more interesting as an animal. It would be limiting to think of animals in human terms.

Though I did agree with the thought. It is an issue with native species all over the world. The offspring can have a combination of behaviors that is frequently dangerous to themselves or others. What was a native species becomes an invasive species.
