Well, it worked out pretty well.
We found a persistent broody hen on craigslist, brought her home, and put her in the chick nursery (a permanent brooder setup & playpen inside our house) with some fake eggs under her.
Late in the night, we slowly removed the eggs and replaced them with the...
WANTED: BROODY HEN
Help! Our own broody has suddenly decided she is no longer interested in being a mama hen. We’ve got six baby chicks, just a few days old, who are desperate for a mother.
Would anyone know where I could buy (or borrow!) a broody hen ASAP, or would one of you have one...
Hi! We have 5 Breda chicks to give away- the breeder kindly shipped us far more than we can keep! They're lovely babies of all colors- black, blue, cuckoo, white and mottled.
We're in San Francisco.
I’m originally from France, now living inSan Francisco. The President of the French Faverolles Club will be sending me a dozen hatching eggs in a few weeks. All bantams, half black, half salmon (In France, there are 7 recognized bantam colors, including white, cuckoo, blue, blue salmon, and...
Hi all!! I’m doing a hatching egg exchange with France (yes, really!) and looking for Serama hatching eggs around the Bay Area (since they’ll be shipping such a long way, I’d like to get them as fresh-from-the-farm as possible...) would you know any Serama breeders within easy driving distance...
Posting this for a fellow chicken lover in Tracy, CA! (Stockton area)
Lonely Hen Needs New Home
We have had Miss Elli since she was a tiny chick. She is probably 4 years old and does lay eggs on and off throughout the year.
Miss Elli was raised with another chicken (Fanny Mae), but was...
So sorry for the delay- I’m in London at the moment, and lost my phone in a forest around Paris. (how I wish I were kidding) Landing tomorrow, will get on this ASAP.
They look adorable. I’m sure we’ll find homes pretty soon. Just let me know if you’d prefer them adopted singly or in pairs or a mix of both. Also- would you be able to drop then off at their new homes if it’s in the bay area? If not there will definitely be pick up possibilities, it just limits...
Absolutely! Please send me pics and we’ll find good homes for them. Do you want them adopted together? We’ve done that when roos have grown up together and get along well.
Hi Jeremy- here you go. I thought since Carl was a bantam he’d do best with a small flock, so Mara’s home seemed a good fit.
They’re ready for him anytime and really looking forward to meeting him :-)
For Bielefelders I already have a LONG waiting list!!!! One wonderful family has offered to drive down from Portland to bring them back up to their organic family farm- it's truly gorgeous. So rest assured finding homes for them will be easy peasy.
Actually let me offer this to anyone in the Bay Area: we're really good at finding great homes for cockerels. Earlier this year, we placed THIRTEEN cockerels within a few weeks! And the new homes keep in touch. years later, we still get adorable pics sent to us from families who adopted our boys...
Sure thing!! We want to create a breed that is:
-super quiet (neighbors!),
-super friendly,
-good layers, laying often, all year round, and good sized eggs
-cold hardy (aka fog resistant)
-small-ish
Here's what we decided to go with in the end:
Faverolles (bantam)
Bielefelder (got a dozen...
