I wash my equipment with soap and water, then disinfect with a product called Accel TB. It is a peroxide disinfectant, safe enough to use on food prep surfaces, and kills as wide a range of pathogens as bleach but without the toxicity of bleach. Comes in a spray, concentrate and a wipe.
Thanks, very informational.
Maybe there should be a cable station - BYC TV - All Chickens, All the Time. You guys could have the comedy show , complete with giant ducklings, hatching news, and surprise reptile egg swaps.
Laree, I see you hatch in your egg turner. I have read in other places that the chicks can get caught in these. Do you use the bubble wrap to keep them from getting stuck underneath it?
Rotten eggs have bacteria inside that somehow eluded the egg's defense mechanisms. Because they are infected, they really have little chance of developing. A developing egg that was cracked at some point during incubation could probably also go bad.

What! I must hear more about this procedure! Please - could you ask your vet if there is somewhere to look this up? I could have so many roos....
You might try putting puppy pads on the bottom of the brooder, then cover with shavings. They absorb a lot of moisture, and when you clean you just roll them up shavings and all.
Awww Mahonri, feel better soon
Could it have been due to your recent surgery? Maybe you need a little time off...although maybe that would be stressful too.
I feel a little like a creepy stalker, sitting in the living room with a pair of binoculars watching to see if my 1 remaining (after the weasel incident) little roo has got his manly mojo working yet. Might still have time for a few little bantam Am eggs...
