Hey New York peeps,
There's a bill in front of the NY Senate right now and they're trying to slip emus in and make them illegal, labeling them as 'exotic pets' even though the USDA defines them as livestock. As someone who owns emus, I am of course very worried that this will pass and my birds...
Really glad to see more activity in this thread! Back when I joined, this thread had lots of regulars that posted often, but nowadays it's been fairly dead, so I'm happy to see new posters :)
So, what all does everyone have for birds? I've got Brahmas, Ko Shamos, Ayam Ketawas, and a Naked Neck...
Basically, yeah. You only really need a rooster if you want chicks, and even then you only need one for every ten hens, but there's an equal number of roosters and hens born, so there's a huge surplus of roosters.
If I have one that I'm selling and it's not a show bird, I usually list them for...
Hey all, have you seen this new proposed bill?
It would ban all shipment of chickens and chicks, as well as all other birds, reptiles, and amphibians within NY state through any mail carrier service.
It's really important that if you can, you take the time to write to your representative and...
Can you bring her over to VT? I actually know someone, a wildlife rehabber, with a small flock of Canada geese that cannot be released for various reasons. I'm sure she would take her.

Here's a cute little muddy hen:
Here's a picture I snapped of one of the hens mid-preen:
And this I found...
I've got two broodies here. One is a ko shamo hen so I'm just letting her keep her own eggs. I think she has about two or three. She's been trying to go broody for the last couple months so this time I'm just letting her do it.
The other broody is a brahma hen whom I don't have a rooster for...
What breed did you go with?
I know you probably already know, but just in case, 'guard geese' only guard to the extent that they will alert for danger if they see it, thus giving you time to intervene if you hear it and letting the chickens know to hide. And their larger size can deter smaller...
If one has it, the other has it. She's just being a 'silent carrier' at the moment. Unfortunately, if you want to keep your other birds healthy and disease free, the only thing you can do is cull the two new ones.
