I am looking to hatch a couple of silky chicks, preferably blue, a few cochins and about 6 barred rocks. I would prefer that they not come from hatchery stock. Spam me if you have anything available in the next few weeks. I would like to set them the first of March. I put $15 for price cause...
I do that too. Right now with the weather being so cold I have to make sure I don't pout out too much or it will freeze and then they cant eat it. In the summer make sure you don't put out too much or it will mold.
My silkie hatched one egg two weeks ago. Daytime temps have been in the 30's nighttime temps in the teens. No supplemental heat at all and the chick is thriving. She takes her chick out in the yard every day and the chick forages next to mama and warms up under her when needed. It is wonderful...
I have a rubber bucket of water in the coop for 16 chickens. I change it out every day cause it gets dusty and is sometimes frozen in the morning. It looks like they don't even touch it.
I second doing a fermented feed. I have 16 birds and was going through a 50 pound bag every 2 weeks. I switched to FF and it cut my feed in half! So now I go through one bag a month and at $16 a bag it is totally worth the extra effort. I go through about one bag of scratch every 3 months.
If I hatch out sex linked birds and seperate out the cockerals early can I raise them different so they will grow faster and I can butcher at 12 weeks? Like if I feed them grower finisher will they grow faster? What kind of weight can I expect to get off a 12 week old sex linked cock?
I have a chick that came from a blue copper maran over a barred rock hen. It is a solid gray chick. Would that cross make a sex linked chick? So I can assume that since it doesn't have a white spot on its head that it is female?
Yes the chick hatched! Mama and chick are safe in the sectioned off brooder. Mama took it out of the nest today to eat. It was super cute. This chick came from a blue copper maran roo over a barred rock hen. Would that make it a sexed link chick? How would I be abnle to tell? I really hope it is...
I have had mean roos that attacked me or my kids and they were sent straight to the burtcher block. I have two roos in my flock right now. They have never shown any aggression so I keeep them around. They arenot exactly friendly either though, I give them their space and they give me mine. I...
Well I thoughtthe skunk ate all the eggs but there was one hiding. When I went to collect the eggs today one was pipped and the chick was peeping like crazy! Mama came back and is sitting on it. I took the fresh eggs out and closed the door so the other hens can't disturb her and the chick. I...
My other hen has only been sitting for 3 weeks now and she looks okay so I might put some more eggs under her and when they hatch move a few to the other hen. Or maybe they will just share babies. I have them together in a broody pen since the other layers smooshed the first hatch.
Two weeks ago my broody lost her three chicks the day they were born, They were squashed by another hen trying to lay in her box. Since she still wanted to sit I took some eggs from another broody and put them under her. Those eggs were due to hatch this weekend. Well last night a skunk got...
I will most likely buy hatching eggs so I am bound to get a few drakes. Its fine, we will butcher and eat them when they reach a decent size. I just have no interest in breeding ducks so I have no use for drakes.
I recently lost a black swedish to a fox. She was my only duck. She lived in the chicken coop with the chickens and got along great with them. My kids miss seeing a duck in the yard so I told them we will try hatching ducklings in the spring. What breed of duck would you all suggest? I want to...
I plan to always keep two roosters just in case I lose one, I don't want to have a roosterless flock. But as far as I can tell right now only the head roo mounts the hens.
Have you hatched any chicks from father/daughter matings?
For a sustainable flock how often do you need to bring in a new Roo? Can you breed father to daughter, grandaughter? If I keep the same roo for many generations when will it cause problems with my flock or will it ever?
I have 4 nesting boxes and only 7 hens currently old enough to lay. She is not in a nest that they were using but they decided that they want to lay where ever my broody is. This weekend I am building her a broody pen to keep her separate.
