Hi everyone, my hen is broody again and she is a fantastic mother. I'm going to pick up some eggs tomorrow and set them underneath her. If anyone else is setting under a broody, let me know,

Australians - Where are you all????

I have always had chooks growing up, and my kids had had 1 or 2 over the years, but it wasn't until 6 months ago that my interest in the different breeds grew. At the moment I have a silky and frizzle that are both laying, 14week old buff Sussex, Sussex and australorp. I did my first incubation...

    My chick died tonight

It's been a sad night tonight as I lost my 5 week old chick called 'Crimson'. I'm at a loss to explain why.....I fed and watered my chicks this morning and sat and watched them for a while and never notice anything was wrong... This afternoon at about 4.30pm my daughter noticed she was standing...

Hi Vichee, I'm also in WA, down in Albany, Your probably the closest person I've stumbled across on here. Do you have many chooks or are you just starting out? First time and the suspense is killing me!!

That's the membrane surrounding the chick. It looks like its quite formed although hard to tell unless you peel the membrane back so you can see how formed it is. Then it may give you a clue

When will my hen become "un-broody"

Interesting thread. My hen chicks are 12 weeks old, she is still broody with them. They sleep with her (x3) and are all bigger than her. They all follow her around and she has a go at anything that comes near her babies, generally rabbits, or other hens......I've tried separating her during the...

First time and the suspense is killing me!!

When you candle use a pencil and draw a line on the egg (fat end) where the air sack finishes. Remember, the black in the egg is the chicken and the light bit, should be the air sack at the fat end. If you hear no cheeps you can make a little hole ABOVE the line (fat end) and have a look.

I just did my first incubation...and there was a time I didn't think any would hatch....but I got 22/26. I did have to help 2 after 24hours ( they had pipped externally but after 24 hours had not progressed) I read so much on here about assisting and it is sooooo true, they came out fine. I...
