I have a lavender orpington hen that I'm trying to encourage to go broody. I know you cannot force a hen to be broody but I've read if you leave her eggs in the nest she may decide to set after so many have collected. Right now there's 6. My rooster died last week so I want to hatch his (and her...
Well, thanks for your replies. I kept her in there for 3 days and broke her! Now I wish she was broody again!! My lav orp rooster died the day I took her out of the broody breaker. I have fertile lav orp eggs and no way to incubate them. I was going to wait until spring to hatch some but now I...
this is my pair of LO.. Edith and Earl. I plan to breed them in the spring. She just started laying around 30 weeks, and he is already a very active boy. He's such a gentle rooster though. Great protector and flock leader.
I hope to breed them after she's been laying for a while and her eggs...
My 3rd broody in 2 months is really stubborn. We have already hatched chicks with the other two and don't have room for more so I need to break her. I have been taking her off the nest several times a day for about a week, and it's not worked. So today I'm trying something different. I don't...
So this morning, my first time broody hatched 3 of her own eggs. The babies are lavender orpington over black sex link. 2 of the babies are black with white bellies and butts. The other baby is black with a brown face. Would it be possible for a BSL hen to hatch sex link babies? I checked their...
Question! My lav orp girl just started laying this week (Yay!) and she's about 30 weeks old. Her first two eggs (yesterday and the day before) look and feel normal except for some Grey spots on them. They look mottled. Her egg today looks normal, a little darker than the other two and no spots...
Just this past Saturday I discovered our resident black racer was just outside the coop, on the end where the nests are. He's not a big snake, but I'm sure he could swallow some bantam eggs given the chance. I'm sure my birds saw him. The nests are 4ft off the ground and this snake is maybe 3ft...
I have a broody and would like to take advantage of her services. I have one rooster, a Lavender Orpington and I have eggs from my black sex link bantam that are always fertile. Can I hatch these? I only plan to add to my own flock with these, not to sell or give away. Currently the eggs are on...
Hi all... I have these two chicks, they are about 8-10 weeks old. Not sure what breed, not concerned with the breed but any guesses are welcome. I'm suspecting a boy and a girl. Anyone care to guess?
I'm pretty sure they're hers. Both of these were laid at the very end of the day, after all my others had already laid. Unless one could be laying 2 in a day?
Her diet is pretty consistent... She gets crumbles and Oyster shells and lots of foraging almost daily. I say almost because some days I'm not home to let them out of the run. But more days than not she does get to forage around the yard. Her yolks are always rich orange though, love them!
So, black Betty. (hen in my avatar.) she is an olive Egger, MOST of the time. Her eggs are not consistent whatsoever in color, and she frequently skips days at a time between one and the next. Sometimes they're deep olive green, sometimes they're more blue. Sometimes they're heavily speckled...
Mine are not flighty at all. Mine are also about 6 months old. They are very large. I'm guessing too heavy to fly because they are the only breed of mine that I haven't had to clip. They don't even try to fly!
