Yikes! She is a khaki campbell. I just put a litter box of straw in that muddy corner. Maybe that will help keep the eggs clean Thanks! Derby

    duck nesting

I had given up on my duck ever laying eggs. Now, at 11 months old, she seems to be laying outside in the run. As far as I can tell, she has never gone into the henhouse with the chickens. Of course, she has started laying in the low spot in the run where it gets muddy. Will she use a nesting...

    Still no eggs

None of my hens seem to be laying right now. Most of them are 18 months old and one is clearly moulting. I just looked them all over this morning and they seem healthy enough. I suspect it is just the shortening of the days and they will be laying well again come February. Derby

Can a chicken never lay an egg?

Besides roosters My pullet must be over 7 months old now and shows no sign of ever laying an egg. She was new in an established flock this past spring and has never been accepted by the others. Will she evr lay an egg or are there some hens that just never lay? Derby

    ducks climbing ramps

There is a ramp up into the coop. My new duck doesn't seem to understand how to climb on this ramp. The flat part of the ramp is wire (1" hardware cloth), but the ones i have seen on the internet have been wood with cleats. This duck has been kind of timid with everything. Does she need...

I have bacitracin eye ointment that I used on my dd. Think I can use that? The eyeball itslef is clear and fine. The swelling is more in the "eyebrow" area and then the area right under the eye. Thanks, Derby

The feed store has terramycin to put in food or to put in water. Can I put the water soluble terramycin directly on the eye? Or does it actually have to go into the waterer? I have had a very healthy flock until this. And she has not other symptoms. I can separate her and give her her own...

I have a 14 week pullet that has swelling around one eye. The eye is clear. There is no sneezing. No nasal discharge. No bleeding. No bubbles. She is behaving normally and eating and drinking. I can't post a photo because my ancient computer isn't cooperating She is my flightiest bird...

Need advice about chick born in henhouse

Yesterday, an egg hatched in the henhouse (long story - it's actually a duckling). The rest of the hens were out for the day. That evening, I left my 4 other hens in the run to allow the duckling to get through it's first day without being attacked. Is it safe to let the hens back into the...

    Name this predator....

Forgot to put the time down. It was about 2:30 in the afternoon. A hawk tried to get one about a year ago and failed. Maybe it was a hawk. I didn't examine it closely enough to see talon marks - especially if the feathers fluffed up over the marks.

    Name this predator....

No roo. But my largest cat is acting funny - similar to the way he acted the last time he got into a cat fight. At first I suspected him, but he never has shown any interest in attacking or playing with the chickens. He usually keeps away from them. Derby

Well, Momma seems to have pushed the egg out a bit so it isn't directly under her breast, but more off to the side. And the pip is still upwards. Looking ok? Derby
