skin all around the eye is swollen. two blisters on the eye lid. eye is fine. skin around eye is also hot. Can chickens get bitten by bugs? Doesn't appear to be any injury to the eye itself. Since vets don't usually treat chickens, what kind of ointment can I safely put on the skin around the eye?? No weeping from the eye, chicken is running around and eating. It just looks strange.

It sounds like an injury. Yes, chickens can be bitten by bugs.

There's an eye ointment called Terramycin but I believe it is an antibiotic, so it may not help with a clean injury or bite. Have you checked carefully to be sure there is nothing under the lid?

There's no injury to the eye. The two blisters on the lids are the only thing I see. There is no weeping, no cloudiness, just looks like it would if you got a sty on your lid. only the skin around the eye is swollen. It's better today.

I had a hen with similar condition. Lasted 5 days and disappeared. Next time I will lance it and apply Noesporin. ?

oooohhhh lancing could be bad - entry way for infection. better to leave blister things alone and apply corticosteriod ointment around the eye only. I applied emu oil - which is a naturally occurring transdermal antiinflamatory and antibacterial (they use this at the Shriner's burns on burn patients - works a treat!)

I think it is those buffalo gnats. I used really good eye drops from the vet with steroids ( ones I save for my horses) and they did nothing. I shot .10 mls of Tylan 50 with an insulin syringe in the pocket of the swelling and it went right away. Hope that helps.

I have 3 hens. One has a swollen face on one side. I gave 1/2 cc subcutaneously of Tylan 50 for 6 days with no result. No coughing or sneezing. The only change was the swollen area became softer after antibiotics. We are on day 9 and don't know what to do. No vet close that looks at chickens. She is acting fine....eating, drinking. I have her in a separate pen. I just don't know. Sometimes the swollen area (usually red) becomes pale almost gray/white) but then becomes red again. Any ideas?
