Jersey Giants thread for pictures and discussion

I just have to think through that Australorp stands for "Australian Orpington", hence Austral-orp. I literally have go through it in my head every time :)

Some updates on the capons. Interestingly, I've notice how "feminine" the crests look on some of the capons. Capon Capon Capon and intact Intact

This chart has a typo. Single comb is rrpp (if you look you can see the box they have it in even is under the rp x rp cross, so impossible to get Rrpp.

Ugh, you people are killing me! Now I may have to keep one or two just for curiosity's sake. And if i do that I have to keep an intact one or two to compare!!! :) I looked closely today, and without exception, every capon has significantly less red coming through.

I am down toward Lansing, I will have some available this fall ( I have lots of chicks right now, but only selling some of the black's until they grow out a bit)

I have (legal :) ) access to sevoflurane, so I can cheat. The original 3 I did, one died 3 days after surgery from massive air under the skin that showed up overnight. Not sure what happened ( if he was to active, or if it was my technique). I now keep them separated for 4 days afterwards. In...

These are crosses between my orginal imports and my Rees line. At the moment I didn't want to keep any crosses, because I am trying to expand both lines, then start a spiral breeding program. Also, I have to caponize at about 4-6weeks, so it's really hard to pick the good ones out :) I am really...

    Cream Legbars

Here are a few comparisons of the capons and intact males of the same age. The capons have orange legbands. At this age ( around 12 weeks i think) the size is about the same. I don't think capons grow much faster, but in theory you can grow then longer before they get tough. They generally do...

...them to intact boys I'm growing out to eat. But honestly I don't eat that much farm raised chicken (the store bought is just so good and cheap *hangs head in shame* ). So if anyone has any interest in them as pets I would let a few go just so I could see how they matured. Vaccinated for...

    Isbar thread

I have black chicks both with and without the yellow chins. It tells you one of the genes they are caring, but now I will have to look it up. :)

Does anyone have any pullets or hens for sale currently? Will pay for shipping. Or chicks, but would prefer sexed birds

Jersey Giants thread for pictures and discussion

Here's my 2 cents, for whatever it's worth First, keep in mind he is still very young for a Jersey. He has a lot of filling out and growth left to do. But over all I really like him. He has a nice long, level back and has the rectangular body shape you really want. I would like a little deeper...

No, avoiding green will make no difference. The green layers can still carry two blue genes. The brown genes ( which turn a blue egg to green) are totally independent of the blue vs. White gene.

    Showing unrecognized breeds/colors

This is a really old thread. We already show Jersey Giants and are working on Dark Cornish bantams. My Legbars are being bred to the proposed SOP, because that is what sells right now. My Isbars are being selected for production and egg color ( because the lines that fit the purest description...

    Cream Legbars

To be honest, these boys look like they have only one copy of the barring gene, so are crossbreeds. This would explain why the seller might have thought they were girls ( because it's the double barring gene that causes the light head spot in boys). It might have been an honest mistake ( didn't...

They won't be sex-linked. For any other info on how they may look, you might have better luck on a thread for BOs or ISAs, rather than Legbars. They should be good layers though!

    Hedemora Thread

Does anyone have heddie pullets available currently? Especially in lighter colors (I have a dearth of black and black/red at the moment). Can take shipments or meet at the APA show in Lima, OH in March if that is easier. Would really prefer Mareks vaccinated animals (would be willing to ship you...

Discussion of Legbar Standard of Perfection for -Alternative- Legbars - SOP discussion

Just to add to the confusion ;) : I was just thinking about the fact that in laced polish hens, their crests start out as white on the edges and black in the center. After their first molt they switch to white in the center with black on the edges (like the rest of their feathers). Had anyone...
