Our suburban menagerie:
My first building project was this coop. I bought the plans because I was "chicken" to try on my own, but next time would do it on my own. I really enjoyed building this- using all those tools I never knew about, and learning how to use them.
I just added the...
I can sell eggs, but not right now as she is sitting on a dozen. She will start laying again in a couple of weeks.
Buttons are a ground bird and very hardy, so in theory they could free range. I do not have them out, because I learned the hard way that birds of prey love to eat them, and so...
I have had great luck with my sweet buttons, and the mama is sitting on eggs again. I am over run, and just want good homes for these cuties.
If you are new to Buttons, look them up on Google. Tons of info there. In my case, I only partially tame as I am a busy mom of 4 and have chooks and a...
I am no expert but asked my vet the same question. She said no, that they have natural immunity.
I called UC Davis Vet school and they agreed. I do not vaccinate my quail, but I do my chickens. The weak virus is in our yard anyway due to the vaccine, so the are protected to some degree...
Same here- did not want to watch it ( tho I do love a good vampire story) but now save it on the dvr to savor each week. My DH hates these kind of shows but now watches it with me.
Sookie is getting on my nerves though.
I read the book series, it is sooo different! I like the book story...
We have few hawks around right now. We were speculating on the Yahoo group for silicon valley chickens that the fledglings are learning to hunt about now, and chickens are easy prey.
In our area a LARGE flock of crows has moved in, and they chase off single birds of prey, so I am not too...
Glad to find this post. Last year I bought some of those glass fly catchers to hang, and the pheromone bait worked ok, enough that the fly problem was a lot better.
I haven't been able to find more of that bait, and finally got fed up today. I scooped up fresh chicken poo and put it in the...
My temps swing from 45 to 90 (at least this week) and I have not seen more than 1/2 a degree change in the Octagon 20 eco. Yay!
One of my guinea fowl hatched yesterday, and tomorrow is the hatch day for the second set of eggs- three Nankin and another keet.
I think I did indeed over humidify...
Thanks for all the input.
The humidity in mine stays at about 35% all the time, with BOTH trays filled. When I put the hygrometer on the counter it reads 50% or so, standard in the bay area, so I know it works.
I got mine from Brinsea- $99 for the 'bator and ~$49 for the auto turner. The...
I think it seems fine. I have bq- have never thought of planting for them, since some one ill have to water those plants! But why not? They will love it.
I love this incubator! Very steady on the temp, and so easy to use. I also have the auto-turner, incubating is a breeze with this one.
I have such a variety of eggs- Guinea Fowl, BR x Leghorn, silkies, Nankin and Button quail too!
Of the chickens, after removing the clears early on I had 16...
You do need air exchange, so be sure not to plug all the air holes. The oxygen exchange is very important!
60% humidity is fine, and reachable with sponges dunked in warm water every 6-8 hours.
Too high humidity has it's own problems- I have had chicks "drown" during high humidity days...
I have the same thing going on...and there are a lot of eggs in with there which are pipped too, and have been since yesterday.
But some finally hatched tonight, so it just takes time sometimes.
My quail eggs are more serious- no pips, and only one hatched. The rest have done nothing, and...
You will not see much except the black shadow of the chicks at this point. Your cool temps will only hurt at this stage, so keep it closed.
On some of the 'bators it pays to keep a piece of foil over the top ( not blocking air flow holes though!) to keep in the heat- carefully checked for a...
I too started a "culture" if you will, of the mealworms, last year during the crisis. I bought a tub of 50 for 2.50 or so, put them in an old container with bran and a piece of scratch paper to cover, and managed to remember to add a rotten apple slice, apple core or green potato half every so...
Our Guinea eggs are large pored, meaning if you candle them, they have black dots like periods on them. They are tan like many of our other eggs, but shorter, and more broad on the large end.
Hope this helps!
I bought the Octagon 20 Eco too, and mine are scheduled to hatch on April 15th!
It does look crowded, so I am glad to actually understand that the bars are to be removed when I take it off the auto turner.
I have such a mix of sizes in there that I am concerned they will hurt each other...
My small incubators have been hatching 1 out of 3 eggs lately, and found they had temps of 104 and 105! I think some chicks may be a little more hardy then we thought. Still, dismal hatching rate, so I bought the Octogon 20 eco today!
This is Red Roo on the left, and Sukey on the right. They are partridge silkies, about 4 months old here.
This is how they always stay together- their "special Pose". Quite a sweet pair!
They moved to my sister's so they could have babies, and laid their first egg this week.
