I had 4 chicks that I hatched in the brooder then my broody hen (not sure the breed, some sort of game hen maybe) hatched 10 eggs. The kittens were chasing the babies, so we brought mom and babies inside and put them in the brooder with the 4 that were already in there...they were maybe a week...
I hatched Auracanas today, too. Bought from a member here. Out of the 13 I received, 11 developed, and 5 hatched. I didn't bother to crack the others to see how far they got. I just tossed them. But when I candled on day 18, all of the shells were good and full.
It's day 22 on some eggs that I've got in the bator that got unplugged not once but TWICE this cycle. And both time the temp dropped to 78 degrees before I realized that it was unplugged. I thought for sure these eggs were goners, but low and behold late last night they started pipping. I had...
HA! I found the culprit. It seems that big daddy White Rock is not the daddy after all. We have another rooster, a bantam, that I though didn't stand a chance with the big guy's girls. But I went and looked and sure enough the little guy has 5 toes, too. I have no idea what breed he...
I hatched out some eggs this weekend. The parents are white rock (roo) barred rock (hen).
Two little guys came out with these toes. The other looks just the same. There were 4 chicks that hatched, two are yellow, two are black with white splotches on thier heads. The yellow chicks' feet are...
My chicken free range on my 1 acre fenced with no problem. There's actually nothing keeping them in the fence since it's livestock fence and only 4ft high (it's mostly for the goats). But for the most part they all stay where I want them too.
days 1-18 temp 101-102 (still air) humidity 35%-45%
18 until hatch, same temps, humidity 65-75%
I DID NOT help it hatch. My DH and DD helped the one last time and this time I won't let them near it.
The sac is broken now and it's about an inch long or so. The chick is walking around...
IN my last hatch, I had a baby hatch with the yolk sack unabsorbed and the poor thing was dragging this bloody mess around until we culled it.
Last night (day 20) I had one hatch and it's got the same problem. What is going on? Are my temps to high and they are starting to hatch too early...
I think I'm living in my dream house.
The house itslef is sort of a money-pit, if you know what I mean, buyt we are working on that -- new windows, insulation, siding...it's over 100 years old.
We only have 2 acres, but we live on a dirt road surrounded by hayfields. Only 3 neighbors, all...
I have a small kiddie pool out in the yard for the ducks and when I'm refilling it, I always let it run over quite a bit so there's lots of water on the ground. The chickens love it. They walk around in it, peck at it, drink it up, but they don't swim.
But when I turn that hose on, they...
My rooster started attacking the kids (jumping at them and pecking the backs of their legs) and he tried to jump on me (I kicked him across the yard for that)... I'm not ready to put him in the stewpot just yet, so now we carry a stick when we go in with the chickens. He leaves us alone now...
I'm not sure. I think it was one of my older hens, but I don't know how old she is. She was already laying big eggs when we got her in late April, so I'm thinking she's between 1-2.
I've never had another like that, though.
