I just went out to collect eggs and found a hen in one of the favourite laying nests. She was very still and very flat on two eggs. While I contemplated her behaviour, another hen hopped up and started pecking her on the head. I shooed the offender away and then removed the first hen. Once I...
This is what Meyer has in their feather-footed assortment: Silkies, Brahmas, Cochins, Breaded Mille Feur. I guess of those brahma seems most likely? Time will tell. Its already getting tail feathers, so maybe a boy, too.
My daughter adores our neighbours bantam chickens, so I added one SR assorted bantam to our order from Meyer which arrived on Tuesday. It is so cute! But I have no idea what kind it is. Can anyone help? It looks like he/she will be feather legged and there is that interesting stripe across...
Oops, sorry, just noticed you said north EAST Indiana. This info won't be of much help for you.
This Old Farm in Colfax processes birds. Also, if you are close to Lafayette, Buckles carries organic feed.
Nope, no rooster. We have the occasional little blood spot, but this was pretty gross. We don't eat all of our eggs (sell about 75% of them) but no one has ever mentioned getting an egg like this. Hopefully it is just a one-of-a-kind thing.
What could that be from? I looked in "The Chicken Health Handbook" and it says chronic cholera or newcastles, but both are fairly uncommon, so I'm hoping it is something that just happens from time to time. Anyone else ever have an egg like this?
ETA: It is in the frying pan, that's why...
I don't know how close these guys are to you, but I've heard good things. http://www.thisoldfarminc.com/processing/
There is also a DIY place in Delphi if that is close and something you are interested in.
Still limping around this evening but comb colour still good. Because she spent most of the day outside, she probably didn't get as much food and water as she needed, but sometimes sunshine is worth more. (speaking for myself ;o)
I looked in "The Chicken Health Handbook" to see if anything...
How is your hen doing now? Mine dragged herself out of the coop today, even down the 1' drop from the door, to be with her mates. She's limping around the yard. I'll probably put her back in soon since it's a little cold and I'm sure she'll tire quickly.
I hope yours is making progress, too!
I have a hen doing the same thing! It started yesterday. She has a hard time standing, but manages to get herself settled between the food and water. Her comb and eggs look healthy. She has no marks on her. I'm thinking maybe she hurt a let getting on or off the roost. I hope someone...
When we got our first batch of chickens, my daughter was four and just learning to spell. We each named two, so hers were Ant and Cat, because those were names she could spell!
I thought it was a little over zealous for love making. But why would he be asserting his dominance over her rather than the other drake? Or maybe he is just working his way up the chain?
We rehomed our two rouens. At their new digs, they share a large house and a smallish pond with two magpies and 5 call ducks. We went to visit them a week or so after they moved, and saw our old drake continually climbing upon the female magpie and holding her underwater for what seemed like a...
