Possibly- the OP did not say how old their bucket was= plastic does lose elastomers as they oxidize so a yr may not have had enough time or sun exposure to make a difference yet- but I agree, I bet their bucket was brittle with age.
Let me qualify my remarks with- I am not an engineer but I am a designer so that being said. I think the issue you are having is one of physics the bucket has a curved surface, the threads on the nipples lie in a flat plane so when water is in the bucket, you have two differing forces at play...
So, in my continued education about my pheasants, I am reading and getting some conflicting information regarding what the protein level should be in my birds diet.
I have read in several places where pheasants need a higher protein than fowl. But I have been told by several aviculturist that...
So have had a closed flock for a few yrs- recently our state had a 1000 yr flood which came to within 50 ft of my coops- since that happened, I have been losing young birds (about 1 a week)- the symptoms are the bird affected will become somewhat lethargic, it's eyes will swell shut with a hard...
I am looking for feeder ideas for pheasants- I have used the hanging poultry feeders and was not very happy with them- then I went to PVC creep feeders, they worked fairly good but didn't like how feed got stuck in the end and was not eaten- bowls just are a waste with my birds as they flip them...
I have a Capuchine pair in a 2 x 4 cage that is 3' tall- they produce squabs fine. My frillbacks and fantails are in 6x6x6 pens with 2x4 houses out of one end
A longtime pheasant breeder explained it this way to me- while it is quite possible to house poultry and gamebirds within the same enclosure, the risk is ALWAYS present. Poultry can and do carry diseases and parasites that they have evolved to such a point where they can tolerate and live...
After years of seeing all the wasted feed ($$$$) I have tried just about every feeder out there- what has worked the best for me is this:
Young birds- I use those clear candy containers with the screw tops (about 1 gallon size) and take a 1 1/2" PVC street elbow that I then cut parallel to...
I am about finished with my 1st lean in loft that will house a pair of Capuchines. The loft is 4' wide, 3' deep and 4' tall, with stub perches on one end and the nesting boxes on the other end. There is a 4' wide x 30" x 30" sunporch on the back.
My question about using water cups for them to...
I think that I am going to add the sunroom to the back- that way I can make the front in two pcs with the lower part being able to fold down. Got the legs done today and putting the bird netting in that will be under the roof metal
I am using only the one nesting bowl (they have been using a dogfood bowl to nest in)
Here is a picture of what I have got so far- yes, the feed and water will be in the middle towards the front.you can see the perches to the right hand side- I used 1x3 and made them 6" long- I based that on the...
How long have the others been in this pen? What I have done to introduce new hens is to remove all the birds from the pen, rearrange everything, add new structure (limbs and such), put the original birds in a dog crate and put the crate back in the pen for a couple of days while the new hen has...
In my experience, two cockbirds in the same pen regardless of which pheasant breed, will have issues during breeding season- I have kept several different males together but where they could not see any hens and they all got along ok- there was some territory stuff that occurred but nothing too...
So I am building a new pen for my pair of Fantails and have a question about perch shelves. I was thinking of using 2x4 about 5" long mounted to the back wall- is this deep enough or should they be longer.
Also, should the nesting bowls be on a shelf as well?
The housing will be 4' wide x 2'...
in order for air to convect or have any movement, there needs to be an inlet and an outlet- a single 8" hole will exchange the air in direct proportion to its volume - put a small hole on one end opposite from the big hole.
I had a similar issue some yrs back when I set my Tupperware brooder...
