Picked up one of the eggs this morning and held it to my ear...DEFINITELY a live chick in there!!! I want to watch that nest, but I feel that I should leave mama alone. Keeping my fingers crossed that she does the "good mother" thing.
I've had my BO setting on eggs her first time. On day 17 she up and decided that she was done with it! So fortunately (?) I had another hen that had been broody for a few days and I stuck her on the nest. Tomorrow is day 20. Don't know if mama #1 was off the nest too long for the eggs to hatch...
I think I am twice as nervous because it is my first time as well as this hens first time. I want to believe that her instincts will take care of things but I worry that she isn't turning the eggs or will just give up on day 15. Time will tell and if we don't get any chicks this time we can...
I was concerned because I had read something about how the shells are porous and thought that the slime could "clog things up"?
This is my first try at any kind of hatching and I swear I am worrying about every possible disaster. I check on her every few hours just to make sure that she is still...
I have a hen setting on 9 eggs. She broke one in the nest. I cleaned up the broken egg mess, but some of the others are smeared with dried slime. Should I carefully wash them off with a damp rag? Or should I leave them alone? It is day 3 of her hatch.
THANK YOU Spartacus_63! For goodness sakes people...I did try to find the owners. Turns out she isn't from the neighbors and I have tried the few other "way down the road farms". God only knows how far that Coyote hauled her! I even put a notice on Craigslist and at the local feed store. And I...
WOW I never expected such heated responses on this post. It has been quite the debate.
I have taken a lot of your words into consideration. What I have decided to do is keep the hen a bit longer until she is mended better. Then I will take her to the neighbors and ask them what they want to do...
She had to have come from the property adjacent to ours. No kids. NOT pets. They eat some of their chickens.
I probably would ask if I can keep her if I take care of her. Plus they should know that their chickens are not protected from the coyotes.
This still leaves me wondering if she would...
So this morning my DH wakes me up with "a coyote got one of your chickens!"
He said it was still alive out in the pasture (where chickens rarely get into) and that he had scared the coyote away.
I went out and found a hen with no feathers on her neck, her tail chewed up a bit, very wet and...
I was going to do a new post about my missing Speckled Sussex hen, but thought this would be a good place to add my question. I suspect she's gone broody somewhere because after the first night she didn't come in I found her wandering about the yard in the morning. Then for the last 4 nights, no...
Okay, so I've read a bit about this odd symptom a few places here so I know that others have had the same experience...but I haven't been able to find any solid answers.
My year old hen seems normal otherwise. Eating, pooping, doing her usual daily activities with her flock, and laying eggs as...
I have a girl that has been broody for a week now. I'm trying to break her and she's been in the "chicken jail". I found an egg in there yesterday. And I've found eggs in there before when breaking a broody.
Is this normal? Or are they not really broody and I've incarcerated them wrongly?
