We lost three chickens to a fisher last night. It tore fencing right out from the ground in the fully wire-enclosed run...ripped through logs that was securing the wire in the ground, too. We found the entry point and two other spots it tried to use to get in. Relentless.
We have a solid...
Yeah...I used to think our run was secure, but I can't find the point of entry...so we're sealing the chickens in their coop at night now. We probably should have been doing that anyway, but sometimes you just have to learn the hard way. I luckily only lost one. I hope lomoka (who started...
We set up a live trap borrowed from a friend. My husband set the trap just outside of the run on the ground. The girls were locked up safely in the coop the night the trap was set..and every night since the incident.
The bait was a raw pork bone...there was definitely some fresh blood on the...
Thanks! I don't let them free range unless I'm home due to predators in the area (lost one to an ermine last week)...so they only get to do that on weekends. They have outdoor run that is fortified, so they can get out in fresh air everyday.
I appreciate any advice. My father gets similar...
This might be a silly question, but I've talked with a few friends that keep chickens and they get about an egg a day from each chicken. I'm not sure of the breed of their chickens, but I know they were purchased as chicks from one of those big chick-selling outfits.
I think I may have...
This guy killed one of my girls and left another in pretty bad shape last Thursday just before dawn. I'm currently nursing the survivor back to health (hopefully). A similar situation...I was leaving the doors between the run and the coop open at night because we never had any problems with...
Anybody else feel a sense of pride and happiness while doing coop cleaning chores?
I was cleaning out nesting boxes this morning and found myself smiling the whole time! I'd much rather clean the chicken coop than my own house. The girls seems so much more appreciative!
Anyway, I was just...
Yeah...the DH saw an ermine in a wood pile the other day. We definitely have voles, mice, squirrels, what-have-you, running around the property. I'm guessing the two chickens in a tree were just too easy of a target. They loved perching in that tree...
I'll have to look into hardware cloth...
Our first loss to predators in three years of having chickens...
I have two hens that love to sleep in a tree in the fully enclosed run (one inch chicken wire). I move them into the coop every night, but we never close the coop/run door...I guess this is all my fault.
Went down to the coop...
Hello,
I just found a 1.5 inch long, very thin, white worm in the poop of one of my chickens. Fortunately for me, I found it because it landed on my shoulder.
I'm not sure if it's an ascarid or a Capillaria, regardless, I want to treat my flock.
Can anybody give me advice on what medication to...
I went home for lunch today and took at peek at my brooder with 11 chicks (~2 weeks old). All 11 of them were face down in the shavings...I had never seen all 11 of them asleep at the same time so I thought I poisoned them somehow! I reached in to pick one up and they all jumped up and ran...
I truly appreciate ALL angles of this issue and can see the pros and cons of each side of the debate (which I didn't mean to start, even though I asked "what would you do?"). I think I'll pay particular attention to her for the next few days and then make a decision. A little extra vitamins...

I hope I'm doing this right...it's my first time uploading an image...she's the one in the front/middle pecking at the ground...sorry it's not that great of a pic, but at least you can see the other three!

Yeah...I think I'll try and learn from the experience, I just hope I don't cause her any more pain. I'm not even sure if she's in pain! Nature might make it's decision, but I guess I'll see if I can help. The DB seems to want to try and to help her, too. The previous post is right...
I have a 10wk old Lavendar Ameraucana that is struggling to grow, seems to have a bad right leg (can't roost at night), and to the best of my knowledge, is having what appears to be regular seizures. She eats and drinks plenty and does her best to keep up with her siblings (she's one of four)...

I really should have taken pictures of them! I'll have to take pictures of the next batch. I was so nervous about hatching them, raising them, I never bothered to take pictures. Now, most of them are feathering out so they aren't in that fuzzy-butt cute stage anymore.

Well, our rooster is a bit of a mutt. A friend gave him to us and that friend has no idea what he is. My avatar is a picture of him. Other than that, the hens were RIRs, Partridge Cochins (those little chicks are SO cute with they're feathered feet!), and a Black Orpington mix. The...
Hi All,
I just wanted to jot down a few notes about my first hatch in case it could help someone or if some of you had some advice to give.
I did two things "incorrectly" from the get-go. First, I had my eggs upside down in the turner for the first 8 days (big end down, little end up). I...
I think tomorrow is day 21 for you. I was told that if you start on a Friday, you "end" on a Friday. Of course, you might have some late hatchers.
Good luck!
