I was worried about the water too, thats why I took it out soon as the low bird started to heal.
Anyways, 4 egg form 7 hens yesterday and 4 so far today. Hopefully all 7 will be back to laying soon.
Thanks. They started molting around June and have since gotten most of their feathering back(some still pin feathers).
I got one egg yesterday and two today. Hopefully they're going to get back in the swing again. I'm also going to put the golfballs back in the nest boxes to see of that...
I have seven Red Star hens, all hatched a 18 months ago. One hen was being bullied so bad that her wings were getting all bloody. I put Pinless Peepers on all the other hens. I also added electrolytes to the water in the coop were the bullied hen drinks. All the hens stopped laying after the...
This is what building chicken coops is to me. Use reclaimed materials along with some creativity and see what you can come up with. It looks great. Good job!!!
Very nice. Great design. I like the 1/4 inch hardware cloth. Next time I build a coop I'm going to use it over wider material to keep out pest like rodents.
My current flock consists of fifteen Red Stars. The first egg from this flock was laid the first day of week 15. Before the end of week 16 they had all started laying.
A lot of people wonder this when deciding which breed of chickens to get. I'd like to see what people have to say about the amount of egg laying from the breeds they have.
Of mine,

Red Star 20/21 (20 eggs for every 21 days)
Ancona 6/7
Delaware 7/10
Worst Layer:

I have Red Stars that are six months old. They are laying normal looking eggs, but I would like the shell to be a little bit thicker. If I scrub the eggs slightly too hard while cleaning they will easily break. Also, if I hard boil the eggs the shells are hard to remove because it stick to the...
Well, I got the first egg last week, two days after I build and installed their nest boxes. The first to start laying was 14 weeks and 6 days old. The flock is now 16 weeks old and 6 of the 15 are now laying.
I have never had a double yolkier let alone a triple-yolker. I was so surprised when my son got this one when making his breakfast yesterday morning. This egg was laid by my 15 week old Red Star that just started laying last week.
How rare is this?
I just put the nest boxes in the run two days ago with the expectation that my 15 red stars would start to lay in five weeks or so. I can't believe one laid an egg already. They are only 14 weeks and 6 days old. This is the youngest I've ever had a pullet start to lay. Beautiful dark brown egg.
I've always wondered what he youngest that anyone has had a pullet start to lay.
Also, I have 15 Red Stars that are 14 weeks old right now. I've procrastinated on making the nest boxes for them. Do I need to worry about it within the next two weeks or do you guys think that I can put it off a...
