Yeah, I use Sevin and Diatamacious Earth (spelling?) in the coop, then set trays of wood ash mixed with Sevin and DE for them to dust themselves. Is there something that works better?
Is it possible to use only paper shreddings during the winter? Would that keep them warm enough? I've always used straw year round, but the mites are so bad during the summer I'm trying to find an alternative solution.
A little backstory - At some point last night my hens went to bed, but apparently, my rooster didn't go in before the door was blown shut. (We're assuming it was the wind because none of us closed it). By the time we realized what had happened, it was dark and we couldn't find the rooster. I...
We had the worst mite infestation I've ever seen this year. If you even stepped into the coop you ended up covered. They got in the food, the straw (obviously) literally every inch of the place. I pulled everything out, burned the food and straw and am now in the process of debugging the place...
So yesterday a huge brown turkey showed up. He's still here. He keeps hanging out near the chicken coop and ended up flying up into a tree to sleep. This sounds silly but I kind of feel like he earned his freedom when he showed up here. The problem is my chickens are running from him and he...
It kind of sounds like he has either some kind of infection on his comb, or maybe even frost bite. I would start a different thread and see if some of the veteran chicken owners will know more about his toes. Worries me that someone gave you a possibly sick roo.
This is an EXCELLENT article! With temps dropping into the single digits here, and wind chills in the negatives, I'm constantly worried about my crew. My rooster already experience frostbite on his combs when temps dropped into the negatives, with wind chills around -20 to -30. Thank you so much...
The coop has ventilation up top near the roof, and the other chickens seem to be doing okay. They're all eating and drinking, and have all, including the rooster, come out of the run to peck at the ground on the warmer days. I just hope I don't lost my roo, he's my buddy! He actually follows me...
So my rooster got some frostbite on his combs during the "polar vortex" that swept through here. I did everything I could to keep the coup above dangerous temps, but alas, I failed.
The worry today is temps are currently 2 degrees with a wind chill of -12. I went out to turn on their lamp...
My rooster has a little frostbite on his comb, as well. The local feed store said there's not much we can do. I tried to avoid all of it as much as I could, but I don't think any of us came out unscathed over the past few days.
Well, here in Missouri we got 10-12 inches of snow, and today is -10 with a wind chill of -25!!! I put Vaseline on my rooster's comb yesterday before the full white out came. They're okay out there, and the waterer is heated, so I think they'll be fine. I hope....
How cold is it in your area...
After just over a month without a single egg we're back to getting 1-3 a day! I am SOOO happy! I'm adding a few more hens and two ducks this spring, so this summer should be a great production season for us! Thank you so much for all of your advice and encouragement!
Apparently I'm not as smart as I thought. Why don't you put avacadoes in there? I've done it and now I'm kicking myself thinking it might be dangerous. And why do you wait on the coffee grinds? Just so the chickens won't get into it or another reason?
I do pretty much what you're doing! lol I run, do what I have to, then run back in! I was out there last night shutting them in and it took me forever to thaw out!
I don't know about y'all, but it takes quite a pep talk to go outside when it's in the single digits. Got me thinking - what is everyone doing on/with/to their homestead now that it's cold outside?
An old farmer suggested giving them cat food. Have you ever heard of anything like this before?
PS. Why does it still say I just hatched? I've been on here since 2011!
