  1. Our Coop 7

    Our Coop 7

This is my first attempt at building a chicken coop. I built it on the back of our garage, and the access is through the garage. Hopefully I didn't do anything horribly wrong that will require major modifications. But I'm looking for constructive criticism. We are in NW Indiana. Thanks for your...

    Egg thieves?

Chickens rock!mysocks : or a squirrel. I learn something new every day! Didn't know a squirrel could do that. We have tons of them. Thanks. Ed

    Egg thieves?

Thanks for the post. We've actually had that happen twice before when there were 2 eggs with soft shells. Other than that, I've had no reason to suspect it happened again, but who knows? Ed

    Egg thieves?

That might be a possibility, but I think a snake is more probable. Thanks for the reply. Ed

    Egg thieves?

For some strange reason, most of our hens are laying their eggs outside, near the coop. Yesterday I saw one egg in a newly dug hole near the coop, but I left it there to be gathered later in the day. A little later, I went out there, and the egg was completely gone - no shell fragments or...

    Bob the chicken

I haven't posted in a while, but thought I'd share this one. BOB THE CHICKEN Bob came home drunk one night, slid into bed beside his sleeping wife, and fell into a deep slumber. He awoke before the Pearly Gates, where St. Peter said, 'You died in your sleep, Bob.' Bob was...

Thanks for the reply. But our little chick disappeared. I have no idea what happened to it. Ed

    Finally!!

We've had a hen sitting in the nest for about 3 months! Today I decided to get her off the nest, and clean out the eggs. When I threw some treats in the chicken yard, she came running out to get some. Aha! I closed the door so she couldn't get back in, and decided this was a good time to clean...

    pallets

One possible problem with using pallets. You probably don't know what they were used for, and they might have been contaminated with something that is not good for chickens or other living things. They might be OK if well covered. Ed

    Advice on floor, please

Thanks for the quick reply. It's pretty much what I expected, but I wanted to be sure before I did anything. A little extra work might prevent being sorry later. Ed

    Advice on floor, please

I'm strongly considering adding a little more room to our coop. We have a concrete floor in the coop, but adding on, I'd like to consider having a plywood floor. I seem to remember reading that a wood floor should be raised a foot or more above the ground. Is this correct? And if so, what is the...

Speckled Sussex information -- our experiences

Yes, 4 of the hens also had very minor frostbite. There is no indication that there is an abundance of moisture or a draft problem, though. But I do let them outside unless it is zero or below, or we have a blizzard like we just had. They love being outside, and I'm convinced that is where they...

Speckled Sussex information -- our experiences

I'm posting this in case someone might be considering getting chickens, and they're looking for a little information. Beginning Jan. 6 through Feb 4, our 6 hens have produced 128 eggs. That comes out to a little over 4 eggs per day, average. Although we don't weigh the eggs, I think most would...

    Speckled Sussex egg question

Thanks for the quick reply. I thought it would be normal, but since this is our first like that, I had to ask. Ed

    Speckled Sussex egg question

For the first time, we got a speckled egg! It is much smaller than the others we're getting, maybe half the size. Has anyone else had an egg like this from a Speckled Sussex? Ed

    I feel old

One of our daughters is unable to have children. She and her husband adopted 2 girls, and took them home from the hospital after they were born. One is now 4 years old, and the other is soon to be 2. They might as well have been born naturally into our family. If things don't work out for them...

    Freezing Water

The polystrene can not be good for the chickens. My advice would be to cover it or get rid of it. Regarding the frozen water, I'm using a cookie tin with a 40 watt regular light bulb. It has been down to right around zero F, with no frozen water yet. It's easy enough to put in a larger bulb if...

What are some of the LEAST aggressive breeds of roosters???

We have Speckled Sussex chickens. They will be a year old in May. The cockerel jumped at me one time, and I gave him the side of my foot, knocking his back about 5 feet. Then I chased him around the yard. He's been fine ever since, and that's been a while. He's the only one we've had, so I can't...

    Regarding Light in Winter

I started using artificial light in Dec. It's a 60W bulb that's been on constantly because I just never got around to putting a timer in yet. I thought it might produce just a little heat, but it just doesn't make a difference in the temperature. Guess I'll put in a timer tomorrow. I'll also use...
