Sand, DE and Sweet PDZ have done the trick for me. Keeping the run dry is important. I have hung fly tape up high or right outside the run when it has been particularly wet and that has helped cut down the population.

I have two folding chairs outside the run. Nothing more relaxing then sitting out and watching them play in the evening. I have a penned in run area, but have a larger pen that is made with moveable fencing. I sit outside this fence. I recently bought a hammock and once this gawd awful heat...
Didn't work for me. I lost all but one chicken to a fox this Spring. I introduced 9 new babies to the run about 3 weeks later. I tried the tucking them under her while she slept and she nearly flipped out trying to peck and chase them. Can't say I blame her. Can you imagine waking up to...
I am horrified.
I ordered 6 chicks from Mypetchicken. They were shipped on Monday. Expected to arrive Tuesday. They came today (Thursday) and 5 of the 6 were dead. The 6th died about 1/2 hour ago. Bleh. Opening that box was all the things nightmares are made of.....
Called the company...
I feel better now knowing there are others molting at this time of year. My 5 will be a year old this month. They did a little molting this Fall...just a few feathers noted in the coop and a slow down in the eggs then it all picked up. But this past week my hens are all losing feathers left...
My Buff Orpingtons and Black Austrolorpes are the sweetest and tamest birds. The Black Austrolorpe is always the first to fly up onto my knee when I sit out with them. I heart her! My BR is broody and mean.
I have just gone through several weeks of 0-1 eggs from 5 hens. They were molting and it has been getting dark here at 4:30 (is it Spring yet?). This past week I have seen a steady increase in egg production and today was happy to find 6 eggs from my 5 girls. They are back!!

I was relieved to see your post. My 5 who have been laying between 4-6 eggs a day for several months have not layed an egg in several days. One of my hens has gone broody and no body is laying. They are a mess. We are hooking up a small light to increase their light in the early morning...
Hi there-
Yesterday I noticed one of my hens had a streak of stool down her backside. Today it looked worse and I took a closer look. I lifted her tail feathers and noticed what appears to be a collection of stool all over her butt feathers. Some of the stool that was stuck to it was formed...
I am fairly certain it is from my Austrolorpe. Week 22. She is the only one laying so far. It was laid in the next box right next to the golf ball. Good chicken!
It was about 3/4 the size of a regular store bought Large egg and the shell was much harder than any store bought egg I have...
Thanks everyone-
It has actually been hotter than usual the past few days, so I am going to go with that for now. Her beak is just slightly open now. I will put out an extra waterer with ice and see if she feels better tomorrow.

One of my 20 week old BO's is walking around and opening her beak wide and looking like she is gagging. It happens about once every 2-5 minutes. Is this something to be concerned about?
Let me know.

I had a similar experience a few weeks ago-but was able to hit the hawk (with my Kindle) before it grabbed anyone. I know have put in a small temporary pen (made of step in posts and a green plastic fencing) that I can pull up and move or roll up as needed. The pen is a bit flimsy so the top...
