If I ever do a turkey again, it'll be a heritage, that's for sure. So, there's no way to help with swollen hocks? Are the birds safe to eat? I'm assuming it's structural problems at the root, but there is swelling/inflammation.
This is our first year with turkeys, and probably our last. It's been tough. We went with broad breasted because I could get them from the feed store, and didn't want the minimum order from a hatchery. Bad decision. At any rate, here's my problem and maybe you can help me out:
Our healthy...
Probably. It's on her side, under the wing. I'm guessing a Tom did it. Another hen has a similar wound. I don't know if the scab and her inability to walk are related or not.
Hello,
This is our first summer with turkeys. I have a sick bird, and would really appreciate some advice from folks who have more experience than I do. I have a four month old BB Bronze hen. One week ago we noticed she was missing her tail feathers and had a scab on her side. Within two days...
I'm really interested in what people think about this problem. I have three runners who are icing up, shivering, and have ragged feathers. Really, any water they splash around in should be sliding off their feathers if their oil production is healthy and their feathers in good condition, right...
Good Morning Michigan!
I haven't been on here in ages, but it looks like you are still a chatty bunch of peeps! It was fun trying to catch up. I've been scouring Craigslist and Best Farm Buys, but thought I should go straight to the source.
We had a raccoon visit the other evening, before I...
I could never give this duck to an unsuspecting person. Initially I did place an ad on Craigslist. I realized that was a mistake when I got several strange inquiries about dogs. I suspect a few people thought he might make great sport with their dogs. There's enough bad people in the world. No...
Hello,
I recently lost my runner drake to a hawk. He was a ham, and a joy to have around. However, that now leaves our pekin/runner drake alone. He has always been a pest, but now that he's alone with only the chickens, he's unbearable. He attacks our dog, stalks our windows, and is brutal with...
Hello! Wow, I haven't been on here in ages- lots of new folks I don't know. Nice hawk Raz. We had a family of Sharp Shinned Hawks nest in our trees this summer. I appreciated that they left my chickens alone, and enjoyed listening to them call to each other.
I do have a question for you all-...
That's good advice. I have a runner who is also becoming aggressive now that he is getting a bit older. He is territorial with the dog, my pant legs, and our top hen. Luckily the dog is forgiving. I do just what you said. I simply pick him up while I am walking and by the time I set him down...

How did you take care of those maggots? I have had friends remove them with tweezers and I have had friends use a solution to rinse the area and the maggots fall out. They got that solution from a vet.
It is important to keep the chickens free from poop. Flies get in the poop and lay...
Hello everyone. Lots of new folks here. Welcome!
This may be old hat to you guys who have had chickens for longer than I've been living, but last weekend we actually "processed" three young roosters. That was a first for me! So gross... I thought I would be able to deal with it. Next time, I'll...

Why are cities so opposed to people being able to feed themselves - I just don't get it.
I predict Oak Park will come to regret this. There's a lot of publicity about it, petitions, etc. I find the whole thing rather ironic. Historically, grass was grown by French aristocrats to show...

Opa, I would really like a Welsummer. However, we still have some summer/fall vacations planned, so I don't feel I could do chicks again this year. Do you think you will be hatching any next spring?
