Day 8 of incubation:
SOMETHING IS UP WITH THE EGG. SOMETHING PIPPED A HOLE IN THE SIDE. OH LOOK. NOW SOMETHING IS ZIPPING A CRACK AROUND THE TOP. WE KEEP SEEING LIKE A LITTLE TOOTH BREAKING THE SHELL. AND "BEEP, BEEP, BEEP, PEEEP, PEEEP."

This is an incubator we threw together very quickly.
A local pet store gave us the cooler from a recent shipment of live fish.
Heat Regulation - The hot water heater is the cheap one from HD mounted ~2" above a 60W bulb in a socket i scrapped out...

that is a good point. i'll keep an eye out for it. the only thing is that it was just one clutch.
anyhow, the birds are growing feathers normally now. still a little shiny in some places though.
i'm sure it was the heat that caused them to have jacked up feathers. it was like...

this.
or possibly a nutrition deficiency with the breeding stock that those eggs were from.
that is what i was thinking.
i called the feed store and a lady there reminded me of the heat. it has been excessively hot here. one week it was even hotter than hot. usual has been 100F...
i can't use a pesticide such as 7 Dust. i'd just have to 86 the ones that don't respond to DE and treat the brooder. then return it to service. these quail will serve as food in a short time.
my question, i guess, is really, is this an insect issue or is it related to the hatcher...

yeah, no kidding! Model_A_Tractor, that is a really nice shack. thanks for posting the photos. it gave me and now i have all pens watered automatically, except the brooder.
there is another set of grow-out pens behind the camera but same piping.
there was just one thing that...
the larger birds in these photos hatched and looked all wet. the feathers looked smeared. i figured out the problem (you can see smaller chicks that hatched a few days later are normal in way of fluff feathers), but now they're not growing feathers normally.
even though the problem started...

according to the table, i need to get the bucket ~7' above the PVC pipe that feeds the nipples?
i will say, in all the photos i've seen of people's set-ups, i've not seen one bucket that high. or even very high at all.
All - i will not be switching to a set-up that feeds from a...

is this correct? i can't believe it. i must hang the bucket at least 7' in the air?
Feet Head psi
1 0.43
2 0.87
3 1.30
4 1.73
5 2.17
6 2.60
7 3.03
8 3.46
9 3.90
10 4.33
20 8.66
and how high to put the bucket? 3/4" inch PVC.
First line: the piping will go across ~6 with four nipples'; then angle down to another pen of 2' with two nipples.
the second line will go across 7' and four nipples.
THX!
For people who use the nipple waterers:
i'm wondering how high to put them for adults; one week; two week and three week old cortunix quail. esp the younger ones.
Here is photo of the type i'm using:

+1 Its poison thou, use it as such. I wouldnt give it to kids or dogs I liked... I use it just as quailmale says. Bill
yeah, i can't use pesticides on this part of the property. one animal is very sensitive. i'd love to take a fogger and blast the area! but, pesiticides with...

at least in this house at 69-70F, you are correct. we now have chicks hatching before day 14 in the incubator and all the time in the hatch-out bator. i can't think of a place that is cooler than 69F.
the chicks hatching in the incubator are being crushed in the auto turner and the...
we've got breeder pens, small brooders and a grow-out pen. Fly traps have been put nearby to control flies. I've "poofed" DE every day to no avail. Flies are still a problem.
These pens are mostly all raised at least a foot off the ground (brooders can be on ground or raised). the quail...
