I pinched off the flowers on my tomatoes. They are barely a foot tall... I'd like them to grow a lot more before expending energy on fruiting.
With all this rain (another inch last night), I need to go weed again... And the mosquitoes are just horrendous! 😩
I have 5 or 6 Buff Orpingtons so it's hard to say if it's the SAME hen every year, but I *always* have at least one BO who goes broody. I also have 2 Cream Legbars, a Gold Laced Wyandotte, a White Leghorn, and another hen (unknown mixed breed) who are all also broody... I love watching the hens...
I've grown, or tried to grow, sweet corn every year for the past 5 years. The first year, coons got the entire harvest the night before I was going to reap it. The next 3 years, I tried growing it inside my hoop house which protected it from critters but interfered with consistent germination...
Broodies... Ti's that time of the year. I've got 6 of them right now. All the more reason why I need to be diligent about picking up eggs every day, although I MIGHT let a couple of the girls hatch a chick or two.
Too bad you aren't closer... I have 7 adults in the bachelor pen and just added 5 baby roos. One of the adult roos is a beauty too....and sweet/kind to boot. I'd let you have your pick... Oh well, good luck with Frank! 😊
Reseeded my sweet corn today... Hopefully we won't get any more flash flooding... :fl
Transplanted some lambs ear outside so I hope it actually rains tomorrow like it's supposed to.... Also seeded some purslane. Every time I try to grow it, the chickens, goats, and horses eat it to a nub... 😂...
If you are like me and have no idea what you are doing when it comes to pruning your fruit trees, watch this video! I wish I had found this 2 years ago...
Going to (kinda) take it easy today. I plan to tie up grapes and plant the Pawpaws finally. The girls stall clean out can wait until tomorrow... My body is SORE today. Might replant more corn if it's dried out some...
I cleaned the main chicken coop, the boys goat house, and half the girls... After that I was far too tired to finish it. I also did some weeding in the garden. Now my old body hurts so much I don't want to move... 😑
It feels like I did more...
Well CRAP.... Just walked down to the garden. About half of the corn plot was washed out.... :he
Gauge says we had 5 inches of rain.
On the flip side, ducks are having a heyday in the water streaming through the pasture.
It's raining so hard this morning that the water is literally spraying from the downspouts... 🙄 I really hope the trench we dug by the corn patch prevents a complete washout....
Did some weeding tonight since they exploded after yesterday's rain. Going to rain overnight again so I fertilized everything to wash in. Going to be beautiful this weekend and in the low 70s. I've got the Paw Paw trees to get in the ground, along with a small Witch Hazel. This will be the...
I've been doing a lot of reading on a reddit thread dedicated to fruit bagging. It seems this is a common struggle with stone fruit. Lots of people trying different things but nothing seems bulletproof yet. So far the best suggestions I've seen are Clemson peach bags and making bags from heavy...
Anyone ever bagged fruit to keep pests/worms off of it? I know you can't use paper sacks on stone fruit... It has to be able to breathe. This is my first time doing it and I used panty hose. Note to self... They don't work. The bugs just eat through the nylon. 🙄 I also bagged when the peaches...
