I don't think the guy I saw using it popped it first.

How cool does it need to get?

Well if it's molting they've been doing it all summer long. I hadn't thought about trying the grower. I'll try that and see what happens.

How cool does it need to get?

At the begining of the summer when it started getting hot my egg production dropped way off. I was getting an average of 11-13 eggs a day from my 18 hens, but now I'm getting 2-3 eggs a day. I have 7 N.H. Reds, 4 Amerucanas, and 7 Buff Orphingtons. The reds are 3 years old, everything else is 2...

    Reduced prices

I'm not sure where to put this so the admins might want to move it. I was in my local Tractor Supply today and they have started marking down the Easter time chicks they got in. Everything was $1 off today. Hope this helps someone.

    Problems with mosquitoes

What I wasn't sure about with the encephalitis is that I know they use chickens all over the county here they call sentinel chickens to monitor the progress or existence of it. Does that mean that the chickens can actually become ill with it as well or do they just carry it?

    Problems with mosquitoes

The last few days when I go to feed I notice in broad daylight tons of mosquitoes in the pen. They swarmed all over my bare skin. It's hard to swat them when you have a bucket of eggs in your hand and you're trying not to break any eggs. The few I did manage to see and or swat looked like what...

    encouraging broodiness

My RIR's won't go broody at all. I think it's been bred out of them. This year's addition, the BO's will and have. I put golf balls in my nest boxes to stop egg eating and they started going broody too.

    growing greens for feed

Thanks I'll give the Swiss Chard a try. Going in Fla. something that does well in the heat is a must.

Thank you got the golf balls.

I wonder if they shouldn't be standard equipment in every nestbox. I've seen in a lot of antique shops you see wooden or marble (stone) eggs. I wonder if these weren't actually in common use but maybe it was so common that noting was ever said about it?

Thank you got the golf balls.

I just wanted to say thank you to all those that suggested putting golf balls in the nest boxes to keep the ladies from eating the eggs. I tried it and it worked. I didn't post a question just searched the archives to find my answer. I set a new record today for eggs collected, 15 !!! I was...

    Getting rid of a Roo

I have a 10 month old Buff Orphington roo who has just plain taken over the flock. He bullies my little banty roo and chased some of the other girls non stop. I'm thinking of taking him to a local auction. Has anybody else ever done this? I'm wondering how it works? thanks.

    anyone feed wet feed?

From time to time my feeders will get wet from a blowing rain that will cake up in the feeder and clog it up. when I go in to clean out the wet mess I can flip out the clumps out in the pen and the girls will go crazy over the feed. It got me to thinking that if I wet the feed on purpose and put...

    keeping them in feed

I know there are several feeders out there that keep feed in front of the flock all the time. Is that the best way? just let them eat as much as they want when ever they want?
