Hello! A friend asked me for some advice on her chickens and I'd love to get your help. Can you please tell me how old you'd guess the chickens are? There's a lavender, a silkie and an EE. The silkie has since turned out to be a roo, but we're still trying to figure the ages. These are the...
I hatched some eggs back in February under my first broody hen. She was a good broody, but a bad mama. When the chicks hatched, she pecked them and pushed them out of her nest as if she was protecting it from them. I don't think she ever realized that they were coming from the eggs she was...
What do yo think? The latest post on my blog are the pics of my two chicks (the yellow one is a BO/SLW and the black one is an EE/SLW). I'm pretty sure the yellow one is a "he". They are 6 weeks old in the pics (taken a few days ago). The black one isn't showing any roo signs, so I'm hopeful...
Right now I do let them free range with the goats, the problem is, if I am away for a few minutes, the goats find a way to get into the chicken coop/run if I leave any spot open for the chickens to be able to go in and out. So, I have to lock the chickens out of the coop/run while they free...
Oooh- good point. I am working on a way to free range in a 1/3 acre daily instead of them being in the (good sized) run all but once in a while when I can move the goats and let them out... maybe once I get this settled they will stop pecking each other. Think it will help with the egg eater...
Ok, stay with me, this may be a bit of a ramble- but I really am in need of some help and advice. I have 1 Roo and 12 hens, all about 11 months old, and I have had them since they were day-olds from the feed store. (I also have 2 of my own barnyard mix hatched chicks, but they aren't...
I don't have an answer for you but wanted to say that is has happened to me a few times as well. No trace of a broken egg- no shell etc, but a messy, covered in yolk whole egg with no trace of damage to it's shell. I have been assuming that a hen is eating an egg, but getting it on another egg...
She probably didn't like being moved at that point, I'd guess. As far as the pecking, you'll want to watch her and the chicks- I had the same thing happen (hen pecking at a hatching egg) and some people said that hens have been known to help chicks hatch sometimes, so that could be what she's...
tweetysvoice- I hope she goes "unbroody" now that they've hatched, because I want to hatch more, but not with her- at least not right now. I may give her another chance once she's a little older (all my hens are young- like 10ish months), but I don't want to deal with what we went through this...
citychick- I'm with you! I'm trying so hard not to go buy some from the feed store so these two can have some more buddies! My husband keeps saying, "but if you have another one go broody, you're gonna try to hatch more, so you don't need to buy any" Ugh! I know that, but I still want some...
So, I had a rough hatch and ended up having to take the 2 chicks that hatched away from the mama because she was mean... but here are my new little *first* hatch of my own eggs chicks!!! The Roo is a SLW and the mamas could be BO, EE, SLW, BR, BSL, or BA. I'm sure that one of the chicks...
I have 2 chicks! Not a great hatch rate, but I'll take it for my first try with a not-so-great mama hen who wants to eat her babies. She was pulling one chick out from under her and pecking at it when I went down to check her again, it would try to snuggle under and she'd grab it and pull it...
