We have four 2 week old chicks being raised by our mother hen Ginger. Their box in our garage needs to be cleaned out. Ginger gets really upset when I even go in there to refresh the water and feed and the chicks all run away from me. How am I supposed to get them out in order to clean the box...
My chickens made a "dust bath" hole for themselves in our chicken yard. They each take turns taking a "bath" in the dusty hole they made. Should I even bother with the DE if the dust is doing a well enough job? Perhaps I just need to leave well enough alone?
I found a message stream on here that talks about this very thing AFTER I posted this! I am just trying to be preventative. So far, my flock is doing fine and I just wanted to keep them that way.
Hi! I am doing this right now. We adopted two 6 week old chicks from a family who bought them for a school project and were just going to dump them somewhere. My nephew was distraught about this and called me to see if we would adopt them. My husband built a chicken tractor for the new chicks...
...went off on me. He told me...and I quote...."Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth doesn't work for crap and I'm tired of people recommending it for their d**n chicken flocks!" He went on to tell me to use some kind of a pesticide powder, of which I won't use. I told him my flock is very healthy...
We are so happy to announce our 4 newest members to the coop!
(Sorry it's kinda fuzzy....I took this with my iPhone)
We were given 7 fertilized eggs from my friend (we don't have a roo) to put under our broody hen Ginger. They hatched during the night of the 20th! Of the 7 eggs, 4 chicks have...
Our hen Ginger is doing really well! It took her a couple days to realize what we were asking her to do. I mentioned in a previous forum post that she was wanting to be broody, but our "top hen" (a Turken) wouldn't let her and kept chasing her out of the nesting box when she wanted to just sit...
Yes, it does. Something I read today said that the first day should be dark to make sure the hen is committed. Then after that, light so she can see to get food and water. I am glad to hear your reply because it felt kinda cruel to keep her in the dark all day.
I went to check on her a while...
Ok, one more question.....
Does it need to be dark in our garage the whole time she's in there? Or can we provide a little light so she can find the food and water should she want to?
Thanks again....
GOOD NEWS!
Ginger has been in her special box overnight. I went out there to check on her and she was sitting on them, and then all at once, she started turning the eggs over and moving them! I think this is a good sign that she's in it for the long haul??
...of the coop being chased by the Turken.
SO...... here is my question. If she has the tendency to be broody, but the Turken won't let her, can we *encourage* her to become broody again if we keep her separate from the Bossy Turken? She tries so hard!!
I know Ginger wants to be broody. In...
It makes the most sense that they might have been fighting. I went out yesterday afternoon and my smallest hen (Bantam Partridge Cochin) was missing some feathers on her head. I figured they were having a pecking order fight or something. I've been watching them today closely ready to isolate...
A couple days ago, my kids brought in 2 VERY bloody shelled eggs from the coop. I figured perhaps the hen who laid them had a rough time of it. The last couple days, the eggs have been fine. HOWEVER, I went out myself today rather than sending the kids and when I looked in the nesting box, the...

I have read in a couple of books, Holderead's being one, that you need to slaughter poultry out of sight and better yet out of hearing of the other birds.
Well, lessons learned I suppose. Let's hope they don't hold a grudge for too long! I'm looking forward to eggs!
Thanks everyone! This is so good to know. My hens are so sweet and they usually come up and get so excited to see me. They've been in a corner of the run most of the day and weren't excited about the tomatoes I brought them. I'm glad to hear they will be fine tho!
