Ok, so here I am posting for my Mom again, shes getting into showing her LF cochins a little later in life and wants to know EVERYTHING! I'm a Silkie show addict, and don't educate myself with normal feathered birds much at all . She hatched what looks like either a partridge or red/gold...
Yeah thats a nice one, pretty similar to the ones the guy had, except for the doors on top. His were slide out doors, but I think the hinged ones are pretty neat too. I'll send her the link, but I don't think she knows anyone with the time to build them? It will definitely help if we don't...
Well, my Mother, thanks to me, is totally into showing birds now , and of course she wants to have some nice custom made wooden transport coops for her LF Cochins to be toted around in. My Silkies do fine in their KW rabbit transport cages, but hers are just too darn big, and she insists that...
Thank you for your reply . We did swab her for gape worm and did not find anything, but she does seem a little better today. I gave her some watered down nutrical and some hand fed fluids, plus oil in her feed w/ probiotics. So hopefully I covered all bases She is eating better so I will...
I am a little embarrassed to have to post this, since we usually figure the issue out and are able to treat. I cannot seem to find any other information based on her symptoms so hopefully someone has some advice from their experience.
Okay, so I have a very nice little 3 1/2 month old...
Ok, so I had heard a rumor in May, at a show here in Ca., about Silkie Nationals being in Ventura, CA this year....well, I was able to speak w/ Dave Anderson at our fair yesterday and it's true! He will be helping put on the nationals @ the ventura co. fairgrounds (near the ocean, and...
I don't know if there are variations in quail cartons, but the ones that I receive button quail and valley quail eggs in are WAY too small for even a serama egg. I have D'uccles and silkies and just use the regular carton. If you feel that they move around too much, just wad up some paper...
Puma and cougar are the same. usually if they are able to get the prey out of the enclosure they will take it back to more familiar territory where they will eat it, or bury the leftovers for later (with larger kills). they are very elusive and don't like to eat where they are in the...
I agree, SC lt. brown leghorn. if I'm not mistaken, I think you can see her white earlobes, little blurred though. She seems real active and healthy and in production (or about to be) with that lopped comb.
Roosters can be quirky and darn right feminine. One of my breeder silkie roos often climbs into a nest box and clucks softly. I reached under him when collecting eggs one day, since I actually thought he was a broody hen, One of our showgirl cockerels has started doing the same thing..it...
My cuckoo and splash silkies hatch with the white tipped toes, oh and the lavenders. they do always outgrow it, or at least mine do, and they have shown fine.
Do you have any pics? There are a few breeds that naturally havefive toes, ie: silkies, faverolles, crevoceurs, sultans.....actually the last two breeds I'm not positive on, but the bird could be a cross or purebred from one of these or another 5 toed breed. Does it have black skin? What...

Have you tried the avian flightsuits or "bird diapers", they're so great! We let our turken and a few silkies roam the entire downstairs (kitchen has puppy gate) and they have a blast. plus it's really cute and funny for us. That way you don't have to bother with the pens, you...
About the skinnier chicks in w/ the healthy chicks, you probably need to worm them. This happens from time to time and you can use wazine in liquid or pill form, but with little guys try the wazine liquid diluted out a bit, it works for mine w/ no side effects. Around 5-6 mos of age you can do...
omg!! I'm so glad we're on the subject, and that I'm not the only one!! I will have to show these posts to my super tolerant, but understandably frazzled husband! Ok, so I have a little brooder and a bigger brooder (for day old to 1 week old, and the 1wk to 3 week olds)in our bedroom, then I...
I agree with the black one being an australorp, I used to raise black standard cochins and they can sometimes have some white feathers in the wing bows that usually moult out before adulthood. The only other breeds that chick really looks like are the black jersey giants or maybe a silver...
Hey guys,
well at least I know I'm not crazy and the possibility for a CA Silkie national is there. Please let me know if you hear any confirmation in the future and I will post any details that I find out.
In regards to the show win; it all depends on the show, sometimes I've gotten plaques...
Hey everyone! So I am getting the birds back to their normal routine after attending the Inland Empire Poultry Club's open show on saturday,(res. champion of show!!woohoo! ) and I am confused. One of the clerks said that California (Ventura) will be hosting the Silkie nationals this year in...
