Okay group,
This year was the first year we have done meat birds... the first set of 25 were white rocks and all I can say is that after 12 weeks, they still looked like rubber chickens (these things were skinny) so now we're onto trying out some jumbo Cornish x's.. We really didn't want to go...
Group,
It took 11 hours and one other friend to build it, but it's done.. What is it? Our first Joe Salatin style mobile meat bird chicken tractor. Here are some pics:
We currently have 50 White Rocks in there, we're planning to allow them to go to 12 weeks....then it's into the...
Hello,
Our pullets are just starting to lay (about 7 eggs a day from 26 hens). They are about 23 weeks old and just started laying about 1 1/2 weeks ago. Today I found blood on one of the boxes, kind of smeared on the sides. I can't fully assess the situation because one hen is still in...
Hello all,
We've got a flock of 26, what seem to be, healthy chickens. They are eating well, drinking well, and nothing seems to be amiss. But there are feathers everywhere: in the coop, under the coop, and all around the yard where they are fenced. Is a certain amount of feather loss normal...
Hello,
I just went to close up the coop, waiting for one lady to make her way up the ramp and noticed one of my ladies on the inside had a gouge type injury on the side of her head near her ear. Not sure how this happened...do you think one of the other chickens may have done it? They've been...
Folks,
Our ladies are testing our sanity! They are about 10 weeks old and have been out in a fenced area with their elevated coop. We have a ramp to let them in and out and leave it out all day. But the question is, how do we get them in at night without highly stressing them out. The other...
Hi,
My wife posted this over in the emergency forum but it's not an emergency, so I am moving it over here.
Our flock of 26 chickens, about 10 weeks old, just went outside a few days ago. They seem to be doing well but they're not drinking much. They seem active and okay but as hot and humid...
Hi,
Our flock of 26 chickens, about 10 weeks old, just went outside a few days ago. They seem to be doing well but they're not drinking much. They seem active and okay but as hot and humid as it is, I can't understand why they're not drinking much and if this is concerning.
Thanks for...
Group,
This is an emergency, we don't want to lose our roo. We just finished our coop last night and I put all the 9 week old girls in it along with the roo.
I had not let them out yet and it was about 90 degrees outside. The girls were laying on each other. We acted quickly to get them...
Well, the past 72 hours has brought a ton of work on the new mobile chicken coop for the Wagar Family Farm. It's not quite done yet as it still needs:
1. A Roof
2. Doors/Windows Flaps
3. Interior amenities (i.e. Roost, Nesting Boxes, etc)
4. Interior Paint
5...
Group,
How many of you clip and at what age do you start? Do you clip both sides, one side all wing feathers or just the primary?
We're free ranging our birds inside a 1700 sqft electric fence and don't want them to attempt to fly over it.
Thanks,
WagarFamilyFarm
Hey group,
Our 27 chicks (5 weeks old now) are doing great and pecking at each other every once in a while (not sure if this is normal if it's just once in a while). Anyhow, just wondering how many of you clip your birds beaks.. Also how does one do this?
Thanks,
WagarFamilyFarm
Ok all,
I just purchased an old farm wagon (previously used for hay) for which I plan to build my new mobile coop on. The trailer currently measures 6.5 ft by 10.5 ft, however based upon the final coop design it will eventually measure 8 ft by 16 ft and about 8 ft tall in the middle 6 ft tall...
Group,
I just got back home form 2 days of graduate work and my wife was looking over the chickens. Just before I left we purchased a second feeder and some grit. I placed food and grit mixed in both and left. My wife then text's me this morning and says that they filled their food trough...
Okay everyone here is a good shot of my MM Rare breed which came free with my order. Notice that he/she is much smaller than the others.. Can you tell what breed this is.. My guess is that it's also a He, but is there anyway I can tell?
Let me know,
Group,
This may sound silly, but where other than Tractor Supply can I purchase chicken feed? I have been using DuMor chick starter but now have read that it's 1: overpriced at 15.00 per 50 lbs and 2: it's full of fines due to possibly bugs....
So where do I go to purchase chicken feed? I...
Group,
As you can tell from my info on the left, I am somewhat new to the forum and real new to chickens so I still have questions... Speaking of which, how much sleep should the chicks be getting at 1 full week old? They are active however, they also seem to sleep quite a bit. We'll go down...
