I posted this a few hours ago in the behavior section, without response (yet). I thought I'd post it here since maybe there will be more traffic????
Our situation... Brownie, a 1st time mama, just hatched out babies yesterday/today in the coop nest box. When Charlie, a one-time experienced...
I came home this evening to find that another chicken had gotten into the broody's nest and laid an egg.... and it totally broke under her. As I checked the other eggs I found one that was crushed at the big end (doesn't look like a pip at all) and the membrane looked like it was shrink wrapped...
Here's the deal... I had a mama hatch out her first clutch yesterday and today. My coop sits off the ground and is enclosed by the run. I took the mama and chicks out of the nest box today and gave them a small dog crate without the door attached. I put it out in the run (it is covered so it...
They are due to hatch on 7/23 and one of the eggs broke today with a live chick inside. There is goo on the other eggs. Should I wipe them off or will this introduce more bacteria into the eggs? or should I wipe them down with alcohol and would this make the mama leave the nest? Any...
Okay, so DH and I were in Elijay, Ga last week and I saw the craziest set up. It was these individual blue, upside down, pail-like coops placed in rows out in a field. From the road passing by, it looked like there was a rooster/hen chained to each coop. Is this a style of chicken raising...
A snake!
My son went out to look for eggs a little while ago and found a snake in the lower box!
It was black with a diamond pattern down its back, no rattle. What the HECK is that kind of snake?
BTW, we shot it with a bb gun and hit it twice. It scurried off really quick so I think we...
I've got 10 mutt chickies that are 4.5 wks old. I think some may be crosses between Rhode Island Red/ Easter Eggers, and some are black with brown streaks in the feathers (I have no ideas what kind of black chicken the parents were). On some, the brown is just on what looks like the spine of...
My 2 boys ages 11 and 12 just took an egg out to try to cook it on the street! I tried once when I was a kid and it didn't work. LOL Anybody else's kids try this? Any luck?

A friend of mine told me that it is painful for a bird to be held while it is feathering. She said the feathers are very stiff and when we hold the bird it pokes the feathers into their flesh like needles. Has anyone heard this? I don't want to hurt me babies!

Mom's in the shower (that would be me) and can't wash the soap off fast enough. She gets out, half dries, and throws on a robe. "Like coming out of the shell?" "Yes!" She runs to the kitchen. She and 2 boys (10 and 11) crowd around to see their first baby pop the lid off it's shell! Way to...
I bought a heat lamp bulb,175w at the feed store this week for when my chicks hatch. My DH has this round metal clip on light that he uses in his shop. The edge of the clip light says
"WWP 660W 250V" Is it safe to use this with the bulb I bought or will it catch on fire? The feed store...
 DH has been turning my eggs for me as I've had to be away for a few days. He accidently bumped the incubator and didn't tell me. I come home this afternoon to find 2 of my eggs cracked. At first I thought maybe they were piping, but it is too early. One egg looks like the crack is a...
I'm on day 13 and for at least the last 24 hours my incubator keeps spiking up to 104F. It has been doing fine up til now. Well, I have been out of town and my DH has been truning them and well, you know how non-chickie spouses can be..... Is this normal, does the temp rise the further along...
I have the thermometer on top of my eggs and it is reading 102. I've adjusted the temp several times and it won't change. The incubator is borrowed. I just put the eggs in last night at 6pm. The temp was at 100 for the first several hours. I plugged it in in the morning and it was running...
