Just had to put my pet chicken down, I'm so sad:(

Hi Everyone, Today I noticed my wyandotte Dottie had a huge prolapse. I have never had this happen before and took her to the vet right away. She seemed like she was in a lot of pain and was all fluffed up with her eyes closed. She kept pushing and pushing and making noises when she did. I...

Hi Everyone, I know drakes are quieter but I was just wondering if anyone knew of a particular breed where the hens were also on the quieter side. I would like to get a drake and hen but have neighbors. I appreciate any advice!!!

Do Indian Runner Ducks eat slugs? Do they make good backyard pets?

Hello, I just love the look of Indian Runner Ducks and was wanting to get a couple for my backyard. I live in town with about a quarter acre backyard and have 2 chickens (hens) back there already. I was hoping to find a duck that enjoys slugs as I've heard ducks will eat slugs. Does anyone know...

Can I put a polish hen in with my big RIR & Wyandotte?

Hello! Well I have chicken fever again this spring and the local nursery has white crested black polish's. And I really want one!! But do you think once it gets pretty much full grown I can put it in my coop with my RIR and silver laced wyandotte? Has anyone ever put a smaller hen in with bigger...

    Leathery chicken egg-is that normal?

Hello! Yesterday morning I found a very large broken egg in my coop and the shell was super soft/leathery, like a turtle egg. I feed my hens a balanced organic crumble, they eat grass/bugs and I give them oyster shell, plus kitchen scraps and scratch occasionally. Is this normal to have an egg...

I'm bummed out:( Had to give up my hen

Hi Everyone, I'm pretty bummed out. I live in town after growing up in the country and I don't like it much. For lots of reasons, I'm sure you other country folks know what I mean:) Last June I got 3 chicks who are now 3 hens and today I had to get rid of my Faverolle to a good farm home...

How many years will my chickens lay eggs??

Hello! I have a Rhode Island Red and a Silver laced Wyandotte and I was wondering if anyone can tell me how many years they will lay eggs for? I just spoke with a lady who was saying the Red will "lay out" in a year, is this true?? Mine are 6 mos and just starting to lay. Any advice would be...

    Does anyone have Salmon Faverolles?

Hi Everyone! I was just wondering how your Salmon Faverolles behave? I have 3 hens, only one is a Faverolle, she's a nut! The others are a RIR and Silver Laced Wyandotte and I know they don't pick on her or anything. She flaps around the run squacking her head off for no reason and the other 2...

How do you dust your chickens?

I am going to dust my hens for mites for the first time and was wondering how you all go about doing that? I've read to put the poultry dust in a garbage bag then put the hen in with her head sticking out and kind of shake it around. Any other ideas? Thanks everyone! I was just curious:)

Not the chickens I thought I was getting! (not a bad thing)

LOL. So I spent most of last spring researching chicken breeds for the 3 chicks I was going to get for my little urban coop. I chose a Salmon Faverolle, Silver Laced Wyandotte and my boyfriend chose a Rhode Island Red. Everywhere I read was saying to make sure the Faverolle doesn't get picked on...

    Help! Sick rabbit?

Hello! Thank you for reading. Today on my way home from work I saw a domestic rabbit running down the sidewalk, I pulled over and he let me pick him up, poor guy almost seemed relieved. I've had him 12 hours now and he hasn't pooped once. He won't eat bunny food pellets but has ate some carrot...

What do you all treat worms with?

I have three 9 week old pullets in a chicken tractor and I was wondering if/how often I should use a dewormer? Does cayenne pepper work? If so, how much should I use? What do you use for a dewormer? Thank you so much for any responses!

Hello! I have 3 pullets, 1 Silver Laced Wyandotte, 1 RIR and 1 Salmon Faverolle and today is their first day in their new coop. I am so excited! But I was wondering if they will be warm enough tonight? They just turned 6 weeks and it gets about 58-60 degrees at night. During the day I'm not...

Hello! We have a 3 week old RIR we are hoping is a hen but we're not sure, it has bolder behavior than our Wyandotte the same age and is bigger, is a crest this size normal in a hen?
