One bird is losing feathers and weight. Here is a picture of what just fell off of her. Of 12 hens, I'm only averaging about two eggs a day. None of the other hens looks like this and I'm sure it's not contagious, or at least I hope not.
I did find some bugs so we have dusted them the last two...
I have lost two hens in as many days. One looked sort of lethargic, the other showed no signs at all. Both were found dead in the morning but were fine when I closed up the coop at night.
Background:
Most, but not all of the hens are loosing feathers and it looks like there has been some...
In designing my coop I had intended to install the AD20 motor and solar kit from Discount Home Automation but they have discontinued the kit because the timer is no loner available and they don't have anything comparable. They do have all of the other components though.
I guess my question is...
I processed my first bird about two weeks ago. It was a 7-8 month old Brahman rooster. I thought everything went ok, but the cooked bird was so chewy we couldn't eat it and it ended up going to waste. I processed and cooked the bird on the same day, which I had assumed was ok. Now I read it is...
We had our dominant rooster for dinner last week because he was tearing up the backs on a couple hens. He was twice their size so it seemed like a good solution to the problem. Unfortunately we have made it much worse. The rooster kept peace within the flock and with him gone all hell has broken...
Can anyone tell me what caused this injury? The hen seems quite spunky and in good health so my first thought was either the rooster or there's been some fighting. My chickens are spoiled rotten so I am not sure why they would be pecking at each other so bad. There is one other hen starting to...
I thought I had my coop all figured out, but after reading the following thread, I am more confused about ventilation as ever. Or at least with respect to my coop design.

For ventilation in my coop I have vents under the eave...
I bought two RIR chicks Labor Day weekend and moved them into the main coop about 3-4 weeks ago, but they are not integrating well. They keep to themselves and are often chased away from the food or water by one of the established hens. Heck, they don't even get to roost with the other hens...
I am having trouble with my hens adjusting to their new nesting boxes. They moved in Thanksgiving weekend and about half of the eggs are anywhere but the nesting box. I used the plans out of the Chicken Coops for dummies book so it must be something besides design. Please take a look and help me...
I moved two RIR chicks who are between 7-8 weeks old into the main coop and they will not bed down or roost. Instead they are crying incessantly. Is this too soon? Should I move them back into their own roosting box? They are fully feathered.
I will not be able to sleep tonight worrying about...
I am wondering if anyone has had a spray-on liner, like Line-X or Rhino, sprayed into the bottom of their coop? I just happen to own a machine for applying spray-on liner and was giving consideration to spraying the bottom of the coop to make clean up easier.
I have a Brahma that's between 5 and 6 months of age and only lays intermittently. When she does lay the eggs they are very small, light in color sometimes with what looks like calcium deposits on the outside, and sometimes with no shell. I don't believe this is normal, but I have no idea. All...
So, not really knowing what I was doing, I built a chicken tractor. It works great during warm weather but, seems too small now that our Kansas winter is close at hand. Plus, the whole moving the tractor every day grew old quick. My chickens also managed to dig up one of my neighbours flower...
I just got into chickens this past Spring and since I keep coming back to this site for all of its great info, I thought I would sign up.
I have three sexed pullets (no idea what this means. the sexed part anyway), two RIR pullets (still chicks), one Brahma pullet and one Brahma rooster. They...
