One of the bonuses of getting chicks from a hatchery or from TSC is that they come with extra critters. The babes have mites I'm guessing from the concentrated preening and ocassionaly scratching. I'm afraid I don't know what to put on them, as this can't be good. What works!
New bantam chickies fresh from tractor supply - couldn't resist - they're so small.... they are lively and active, but THEY PECK AT each other's eyes! What gives with that?
OH dear! 6 eggs, they candled ok - may be one dud - they were alive and swiming. Day 21 came and WENT! Day 22 - ONE hatched. Then, the trouble started. The infra red lamp caused the incubator in the room to over heat. It went up to 102 around there - and for how long, I can only guess - a...
ok, it's day 21, but NO CHICKS! I don't dare open the incubator to candle again. I'm wondering if there is a chance that the eggs are slow because the bator was not up to 99.5 for the first few days but at 90-95 degrees??? Last week some of eggs resembled the pictures of eggs at days 9 and...
Henrietta23 generously gave me some ee/silkie cross eggs and two buttercup eggs. I only had access to an LG bator from TSC. So far, so good. The buttercup eggs are developing, I can see them moving, and the ee/silkie eggs are blue, so it's hard to see. BUT from what I can see there is a hard...
Hello,
I know I promised I wouldn't do it, but then along came an opportunity to purchase some newly hatched (1 week) Wheaton Marans chicks. Are they able to be sexed at this time (probably not) but I thought I hope. The guy claims he can't and in the meantime they'll have eaten $10 worth of...
Last night, chickens were out foreging before sunset, and I heard strange calls. Ran to investigate and found a Cooper's Hawk on the ground with its wings fanned hiding one of my buff orpington girls. I chased it away, and picked up the chicken. She had some blood on the side of her head...
I have a 4 month old silkie/EE cross. "Owen" is a beautiful boy, carmel and white with a gorgeous sexy white with carmel edging tail. He is not the biggest roo on the farm so he does not have anything to crow about
In the spirit of keeping the neighbors happy in their quiet space, I need to...
TOO many roos.... I know, it's the same old sad song... but, I'm hopeful that someone may want a gold laced wyandott boy. I've got 2, and they haven't started crowing yet.
Sorry to be gross, but what are they? The hen has had rampant diarrhea for the last week. I thought she was egg bound as she was quiet and straining, but nothing happend. I can't feel any egg. However, today I noticed these small squirming wiggling 1cm white worms in a mass pile right above...
OK, two maiden broodies are ready to hatch their two little EE/Silky eggs each. The eggs are peeping and I've read ALL the horror stories posted here. I have NO incubator. SO, when can I expect the show to start, and what can I expect.
1. all the chickens in the coop will put in a movie...
skin all around the eye is swollen. two blisters on the eye lid. eye is fine. skin around eye is also hot. Can chickens get bitten by bugs? Doesn't appear to be any injury to the eye itself. Since vets don't usually treat chickens, what kind of ointment can I safely put on the skin around...
I had an egg bound hen. She was a MESS. Vent feathers a mess of sticky mucus and very little blood - probably from straining. I kept her inside for a few days, and today out of desperation I stuck her in the sink and plyed her with very warm water. I washed her clean and gently inserted my...
Perky, bright, eats and drinks - looks fine until you check out the vent area. Some blood, very small clots, the rest is a clear, mucus like, sticky, nasty discharge. No smell, vent feathers a MESS, other chickens interested in pecking her there. Hen stays close to me. Currently, she is in...
All my girls were fine this morning. Went out to coop tonight, and one hen Sally was dead in the nest. Not a mark on her. We buried her. OH My Hen! I can't imagine what did her in? I suppose that birds are good at hiding illness until they are overwhelmed. They eat the hay I put in for...
hey, I never saw this before - hen standing more upright than usual - tail pointed down, eyes closed, grunting and then POP a nice egg - too bad those greedy other hens with eyes gleaming grabbed it - broke it and ran off with the shell! AND while I was still flabbergasted, my hen walked off a...
Hello everyone! I'm a new chicken enthusiast. I live in Lisbon, CT on a small farm. So far we have a bumper crop of boulders and ferns. The only livestock so far are 2 horses, 3 cats and a husband (also new). We would love to fill the ice house with some Partridge Cochin bantem chickies -...
