I let my girls free range as much as possible, and I found my best layer eating egg shells in the compost.
Since they are just starting to lay, could she be missing something from her diet (I've heard of giving them oyster shells)
Or..... Could she now have the taste for eggs/shells???
A couple days ago, our girls were free ranging and our brahama got stuck in our neighbours fence. I cleaned the wound and put her in iso.
This morning I took a look at it and her leg is turning green. There is no swelling at the site of the wound or on her leg. I'm not sure what to do...
Hi, I'm sure this is covered somewhere.... I just can't seem to find it right now. (I will when I don't need to read up on it..)
We have two sets of chickens, 6 four month old pullets, and 4 5-6 week old pullets. we have been slowly introducing the two groups. Today my husband put all of...
We have 10 chickens, all on non medicated food. We hatched one egg, and we can't seem to find the 'medication' to give it. We know that we can order it online, but it usually comes in a very large order.
SO, can we just give the chick the non-medicated food, as all of the other girls have...
So when we picked out our chickens, we were given some fertile eggs. Since we have younger children we wanted to see if we could in fact hatch these little ones.
Well..... 21 days later we have a baby. Only one so far. And thus my question.
How do you introduce only one chick?!?!?! We...
Very hard to get this little one to cooperate with the camera. Any guesses on a pullet or cockerel??? We can't have a rooster. Better to get rid of if before I get too attached. :(
Is this little one a pullet or a cockerel??? We aren't able to keep a Rooster, and I am scared of getting too attached. There are teeny little tail feathers coming through, but as "she" is only a week (give or take a day or two) old is it too soon to tell?? "Her" other week old girlfriends...
Is there any way to tell if you are getting a hen or roo?? We are going to get a couple more chicks tomorrow, and we can't have a roo. We are going to get a red/blue laced Wyandotte and I want to make sure I can keep it.
Thanks for the help and feedback! :)
We had the girls in the run today. (I was at home with our two children) and when it was time to bring them back in (they still live in the house, as they aren't fully feathered yet.). I was putting them into the bin to bring them back and two escaped. Out of the run, into the yard. At this...
Hi,
We have 4 five week old chicks, and we are thinking of getting a couple of ready to lays. Our chicks are currently in our laundry room, and it's still too cool to get them into the coop. If we were to get the ready to lays, they'd be going into the coop. We will be moving our laundry...
I have talked to some that say they have had hens that lay until the day (or day before) they die. And then I've heard others say that they will only lay eggs for a couple years.
Does it change for every bird and breed?? Would a roo keep them laying?
I'm not too sure what she is...... Anybody have a guess..... doesn't really matter, as she is just going to be a layer..... But I'm very curious!!
She's almost 4 weeks old, so not too much to go by.
thanks ;)
We have four 4 week old chicks, and we got them from someone who kept them in a shed. So.... They are not used to being around humans. Are there any tricks for getting them used to us, or at least not so terrified when we walk into their room??
We had them in the living room, but we have two...
Hey, we just got our little girls. Four 4 week olds. Have them in the house with us for the next month or so. Can't wait to see what they will look like grown up. Love them already, and it's been 18 hours.
When do they normally lay their first egg?? Does it change for every breed? Ah, I'm...
