I bought this chick at a feed store. She was in the bluebell chick group. I've never seen the long tufted tail feathers on a chicken before - can anyone tell me if there is a breed that has those feathers? She has a beard too.
Hi everyone, I have an eight week old 'white rock' from a feed store. I haven't typically seen a comb this red in a pullet this early, but wondered if there was a chance this breed develops faster? Any thoughts? The buff orpingtons are about the same age.
My hen's first egg hatched today!!! Very exciting! The only problem is that she and the chick are on the opposite side of the chicken house from the nest. She's caring for the chick and so has left the eggs - at least for now. I'm trying to decide if I should do anything or leave her be...
This chick was sold as a buff orpington - I'm guessing no since feathers are white? I was thinking maybe a Cornish cross or a leghorn? She is a little larger than the others. The chicks are about 2.5 weeks old. Thanks in advance for any help!
Hi, I've just purchased a few cuties. Two of them are Easter eggers. I think I have a pretty good idea about the lighter one but the darker one looks more unsusal (to me), any idea of how it may look as an adult (in general)? Thanks!
I was gone for a couple weeks, only to return and find out from my hubby that my hen, sitting on about 20 eggs for 20 days, decided to start switching to a different nest. But has apparently been going back and forth. This was about 3 days or so ago. I arrived home today and picked up the eggs...
My hen apparently left her clutch of about twenty eggs sometime today. The high today was 90 and is about 75 now. I have a incubator and we're bringing the eggs in. Do you all think there's a chance they may survive, assuming at least some of the eggs are viable? Anyone have this issue...
I have two silkie roosters. They aren't too much of a threat to most of my hens (I have 8) but three are getting picked on pretty heavy. They keep pecking them in the head and comb. Would it be better if I removed one of the roosters? I know they should typically be in a 1:8-10 ratio but the...
Probably a totally paranoid question but Is it strange that my one silkie chick's wings hang down a bit? I looked back at my original chick pics from my first chickens and they didn't seem to hang like this. Thanks!
Hi, I have two 8.5wk old Australorp chicks. One has different looking feathers - at least it's very different from other chicks I've raised. Has anyone seen this pattern before? Is it unusual? Thanks!
Until recently my six laying hens have got along great. One hen started to feel under-the-weather and a couple of our chickens started picking on her. I was able to help her perk up with electrolytes/vitamins and she seems to be better, but she is scared of the two hens that have been picking...
I have two 5 week old australorp chicks. The one chick has some interesting feathering - rather than laying flat her feathers are disorganized looking and flare a bit. Could she have a frizzle gene or is this just a normal australorp thing? Thanks!
I have a one year old chicken who's been laying rather rough eggs lately, and fairly thin-shelled. They do have access to oyster shell/ layer feed and everyone else is laying fine (ie - smooth-thick shelled). I saw her today sort of just standing in the yard and noticed a thin strip of...
I had to have my three week old chick put down today. I originally suspected and the vet agreed that she had two slipped tendons. I agreed to let them do a necroscopy. Afterwards I started thinking about her eyes - they were a greyish color and she seemed to have a hard time seeing food...
Okay, so I have a two week old chick that has a history of pasty butt. A friend brought her home from a feed store after she was getting picked on by other chicks. She had her and helped the chick recover for a week and a half or so - although she still has pasty butt. She gave her to me...
Hi all,
I have six chickens currently - 2 gold-laced wyandottes, 2 buckeyes, and 2 easter eggers. I am considering getting a couple cuckoo maran chicks (gotta love chicken math). Is this is a reasonable number to add to the flock (once they grow up of course) or do I need more? Trying not...
Hi all,
I'm so excited about having eggs soon! I've noticed the girls checking out their nesting boxes (they are 21 weeks now). Today I noticed one sort of standing still and sort of squatting. She looked like she was trying to push and she was grooming her vent area but nothing came out...
My 8 week old GLW just swallowed an 8 inch worm snake whole - is there something I should do about this or should she be able to handle it on her own? Thanks
Ok, so I was working on my signature line and paused when I got to my 2 "Ameraucanas." They were sold as Ameraucana's but from what I've seen here they may be EE's - please help me clarify which these are. Thanks :)
