Type of Bulb for Winter Light in the Coop...

I've been rolling through several articles here on BYC and a few online as well. I'm a bit confused to what type of bulb I need to light the coop this winter. What spectrum light? Florescent? LED? Rope lights? I'm in northern Ohio. We get chilly, mostly we get windy and chilly. I'd love...

One Chicken (10 weeks old) losing a lot of feathers...

I'm unsure what's going on or if it's normal. I have one chicken, 98% sure it's a black australorp is losing a lot of feathers. None of my other girls seem to be losing like that. Total of 15, all the same age. They've been in their coop for a few weeks now, no new food changes, I don't see...

Do different breeds feather out at different times??

I have 15 chicks I got all at the same time. Same hatch day (as far as I know). I have some that already have most of their wing feathers, and others that are just starting to get their wing feathers. Size is a big deal too. My RIR have majority wing feathers and are bigger than 2 of my CW...

    GLW from Meyer Hatchery Lately...

I ordered (2) GLW from Meyer and received an order Feb 6th (hatch date was 5th). I don't see them at all in my chicks! I can see the CL and the SLW just fine..but I don' see a speck of gold on any of the other chicks. Anyone order any GLW around those dates and received similar? I suppose...

    I just can't tell!

I *think* I can tell my SLW. I am pretty sure I can tell my BR (from the spot on top of their head). I my only (2) chicks that aren't black, must be my RIR...but I also am supposed to have GLW. Can anyone with better experience help a newbie out!? The last I included just...

    Ugh. A poop question!!

Poop check! Is this alright? 4 days old. Brooder at 95 with plenty of space for them to move away from heat. FF. (I'm pretty sure it's fermenting). Water w/UnACV and vitamin/elec packet.

When can I remove the paper towels??

Lil poop machines. I have been using paper towels on top of the bedding (the usual shavings) to keep them from picking...but they seem to be taking to the FF well. They're 3 days old.

Is it alright to brood in 'cold' garage??

I'm a lil concerned. I'd prefer to brood them in the garage vs in the house. However, it's a garage, it can be chilly in there. We park in there- so the doors are opened/closed a few times a day. With that being said..as long as the temp in the brooder is 95 (and then adjusting for age) does...

    Dr. Emmo's Wound Care??

Has anyone ever used Dr. Emmos Wound Care Spray Gel on their chickens? Says safe for all animals...it would be an alternative to Vetericyn. I don't have any issues at the moment, my chicks aren't even due to arrive for 20 days...but I'm trying to have a lil "ER Kit" prepared...

Why have a Rooster if you want just eggs?

Forgive what I'm sure is a silly question! I'm obviously new! We're looking to get some chickens next year and I'm in MASS research mode! I'm wondering why you want a Rooster if you don't want to hatch chicks? We're primarily wanting chicken's for eggs. (hen is a female layer right?-...

    City girl converted!

Hello! Found this website after a google search..gotta love google! I'm a city girl with a former farm boy husband. That being said- we've got 4 1/2 acres (not much to a lot of people- but tons more than the city lot I've had all my life!) and a 1/2 acre pond, a dilapidated pole barn and a...
